We bought 8 or 9 arilbred iris from Superstition last year. Refiner's Fire was the first to bloom.
Several others have stalks forming and lots of increase.

Our second potted NoID Louisiana iris bloomed and the first one opened a second bloom.
Both stalks are a little stunted. Must have been the lack of rain in most of January and February.

This season for us is crazy early. I just spotted two bloom stalks on one of our Spuria iris.
The Louisiana beds have over 20 stalks already. No color, but lots of stalks.
Many to most of these iris usually bloom the middle of April.

Got a question about those AB Irises -- do the falls always have that re-curve to them?

That is one of the characteristics of the oncocyclus arils. On pure arils they can be so recurved that they almost roll up.

Here's a link to a photo of Sheik with very recurved falls.

Interesting. It's a form I'm not fond of --- I like the flaring falls of Irises. But that's a very pretty bloom (Sheik) -- it helps a lot of you just think of it as a different flower.

It a characteristic that some people like and some people dislike. Often it's a phase in the life of the bloom. A new bloom may be tightly re-curved and then let the falls relax as time goes along until the re-curve is gone or much less pronounced. That's particularly true in arilbreds. I've found that most of them relax the falls after a bit, but I have very windy and usually warm conditions which may shake the re-curve out more than in cooler climate with less breezy conditions.

Another aril opened and another IB

Ginger Spice by D Foster
The second photo shows the recurved falls like Donald mentions in his post.
I'll try and remember to retake the shot is a day or two to see how much they relax.

It's a rebloomer that bloomed this past fall and winter.

Think I have identified my mystery Iris. Looks like Brigadoon. Has the bloom time, height, purple-based foliage, form, unique coloring, and distinctive beard (it also bends in the wind when that wind is continous Hilarious! ). Top two photographs are from yesterday afternoon, next three are from this morning. What do you think?

I finally have a stalk on a TB! It's Full Tide. I'm pretty sure it was one of the first to bloom last year.

Debra,

The only way to truly know if it is Brigadoon would be to do a DNA test. Cost might be prohibitive and you have to be sure that the one you are comparing it to is the correct one.

That being said, get a piece of Brigadoon and grow it next to it and compare them when they bloom. Bill Maryott taught me to tear the petals off to be able to compare all of the beard and both sides of the petals.

But you have so many things the same, call it Brigadoon and be happy.

Congratulations. It's nice to put a name to a flower.

The good news is that humans are unable to hear flowers scream.
