I love container gardening, and since I have very little property around my Mobile Home, I have to resort to gardening in pots and urns and containers. I'm delighted to be able to grow Clematis in
containers - and the Hand watering is good exercise for me. Thumbs up

I have one in a very large pot with a obelisk in it, it's one of the shorter varieties, 6-8 ft.
A stone urn sounds interesting Alan! Does it have drainage holes?

Clematises are such fun Smiling

I've not had success growing them in containers before, but I did manage to over-winter one this year and have new leaves now Hurray! it lives!

You will probably get blooms out of Jackmanii at the very least.
Which two will you put in the ground?

Welcome Alan. I grow some clems in containers.I use the same techniques as when I put them in the ground...crown 2-3" below soil, mulch and fertilize.I add expanded shale in the soil to make sure the drainage is good. They seem to need a little more attention in a container to make sure they don't dry out or stay too wet

Welcome Alan, you will have very knowledgeable clematis gardeners here to help you.
I have several growing in large pots.

These two are Princess Diana and rooguchii.

My first bloom is a light pink one (NOID) which is on a 8 inch stem with few leaves.

Well, yes, I think you have to be careful of "overwatering" too when planting in containers.
I know Clematis love water, but I'm certainly not going to watering daily or even every other day.
Right now in New Jersey the weather is cool and Days filled with sunshine are few and far
between, so I'm watching my watering carefully. I have only planted (1) Clematis thus far -
the other (5) plants will be arriving next Month. So I will have a total of (4) plants in containers
and (2) plants in the ground.

Yes, the stone urns do have drainage holes and drain quite well. I have Bamboo stakes in a Tee-pee style arrangement. I'm pleased with how the first Clematis looks.

Thank you goes out to those of you who offered me such a Warm Welcome to this Forum !
Thank You!

Welcome to the clematis forum AlanJ! Clematis are a wonderful addition to any garden, wether they're grown in pots or on the ground. I grow Barbara Jackman in a pot, and it's done well here. I wish you all the best with growing your new plants.

Here are some blooms from my garden today. I believe this is the earliest I've ever had these 2 plants blooming.

I do think that old saying, "First year they sleep, second year they creep and third year they leap" applies to clematis so it will be fun to see the difference from year to year! Thumbs up

Hi Suzanne: Yes, I thought about that old saying, and screamed out YIKES !!!! Do I really have to wait 3-Years to see my Clematis bloom????? Grumbling I'm hoping that is not the case. I'm a very impatient gardener, so I'm hoping I will see maybe 1 or 2 blooms this Spring/Summer in my Clematis nodding By the end of April I will have all of my 6 Clematis plants planted and will anxiously wait to see that first flower bud. So say a prayer for me and my Clematis! Thumbs up Thank You!

Most of mine bloomed the first year so keep the clematis faith! Here's just one example of a clematis from Walmart.

You should see blooms this year but it will be getting those roots built up.

FYI, I have been adding images the past few days from Brushwood Nursery, (got their permission) so many of them I have never heard of, just so tempting!!

I have only planted one Clematis thus far - Clematis 'Rosemoor' and when I unpotted it to plant in the Urn, I was amazed at the extensive root system the plant had. So far this Clematis is growing
very well and it's only been planted for 3-weeks. I also have a Clematis coming from Brushwood Nursery (Clematis 'Versailles') which I'm looking forward to receiving.

You're welcome @AlanJ Smiling I have also had clematis bloom the same year they were planted. I'm now growing some nice plants, thanks to Arlene's ( @pirl )advice.

Today, I worked in the drizzling rain to get plants added to my potted Barbara Jackman on the driveway. I'm working on a shades of purple theme, and added Homestead Purple Verbena, purple African daisies, Tourenia, lysmchia, and a cute little plant that IDK the name of.

Barbara J. from 2015, I'm hoping for some nice color echoes with the new accent plants added to the pot today.

Ernest Markham also got planted today, in a small bed that also contains hellebores. It had been living in a plastic pot for 2 years, the root ball was huge.
