I agree with Donald, the plant will do what it can do.

I finally finished planting the daylily seedlings today. 648 in all Confused WHAT was I thinking????

Too much to do. Remodeling: Four rooms are getting new floors and paint. Also have to plan a family reunion for July 9th. Crying Worried about getting it all done, but things are slowly coming together. So glad to have the seedlings in the ground.

I know I have them planted too close but I was in a hurry to get them in the ground. My rows are 8" apart; 26" long; each row has 5 to 8 seedlings (an average of 6 seedlings per row). So that makes them approximately 4 to 5 inches apart (some even a little closer). I had hoped for 8" apart but that didn't happen.

I made a chart with all the crosses listed. Row number on the left, followed by pod or pod x pollen, followed by the number of seedlings planted in the row. Some rows are have more than one variety in them. I also buried the little plant marker in the ground at the ends of the rows (just in case).

Sue - 648 ????!!!! Oh my! That's quite a lot of seedlings. Well one thing that usually happens is that not all of them make it. So if that happens to you, it might work out to your surviving plants advantage.

648 Sue! You are magnificent!!!

I am half that vegetation and I feel like Tarzan in the jungle's depth.

That happened to me and I found myself so relieved because I didn't know where I going to put all of mine. I haven't even pulled half of my seeds out of the fridge (I had over 2K seed from last year), but those I did, I only planted if I could get them to sprout. After that, the weather--particularly the harsh sun--killed off the weaker ones I had growing in peat plugs. (And for appeared to die from the lack of water and the harsh sun, but actually sprung back, something I didn't think brand new seedlings could do...I imagine those will be the hardiest of the bunch.) I'm now down to a little over one year of selling out of three full ones planted.

648! Wow, what a lot of seedlings.

I will be planting mine out this week. The bed is all ready for them, and I wanted to wait until we got through the heat wave of this past week before putting them out. It is supposed to be cooler over the next few days, so I will get them in the ground and released from their pots.

Sounds crazy, but that's what I'm hoping for to give them more space. *Blush* Survival of the fittest, that's the name of the game.

What is the latest date/time of year you would plant seedlings? I had a few seeds from last year that I forgot to get started during the winter. I started them the end of April/first part of May. Of the 23 seeds I had, I now have 16 little plants that seem to be growing well. I started them in one of those cell-type seed starter trays from Wal-Mart and moved them to larger pots once they got bigger. I am in the process now of hardening them off. I have been setting them out in the sun for a couple hours each day (started with setting them out for one hour), but I haven't been able to be super consistent with setting them out (crazy baseball/softball schedules and all that). I am planning on putting up a small raised bed for them because our soil is so poor. I was thinking that I would wait until the end of July or early August to plant them out so that they don't have to endure several months of high heat, but I am wondering if it would be better to go ahead and plant them as soon as possible. Any suggestions? Confused

These are the very few seedlings I'm growing, since I don't have enough room for many.
I was thinking of letting them in the pots and move them to the new small bed in autumn. But pots seems a bit small now. Not much deep.
So I'm thinking to move them well before autumn. They live outside, in full sun or full rain, whatever it comes. maybe next week we'll have some drops of rain and I'll transplant them. Or is it too hazardous?

Thank you for the reply.

How do I know for sure when the babies have "hardened"?

Also, when I put my bed what type of sunlight requirements will the little seedlings need? Should I put them somewhere with morning sun/afternoon shade or vice versa? Do they need full sun (i.e., 10+ hours of sun a day)? Do they need water every day once they are out in the hot sun full time? Anything else I should take into consideration when planting them?

I'm assuming you started them under artificial lights? Once they can tolerate 6 hrs of sun without sunburn they should be good. if they start looking burnt or bleached reduce the sun a little and try again in another 2 or 3 days.
With you being in zone 6a 10+ hours a day full sun would be fine once established. I live in 7b/8a so for me morning sun and evening shade works best especially with triple digit days. Good luck Amber and keep us updated.

I have young seedlings (couple of weeks old) ánd am in the process of germinating more seeds Whistling
I had been planning to do this about 2 months before now, but things happened and I didn't get around to it

If I can I will plant them out the Summer, at the end of september at the latest (is that English? lol!)
Only if they are really too small by then I will overwinter them in my garage, under artificial light Shrug!

I did that last year, with seedlings I germinated in September - October.
The problem I had last winter was a massive infestation of gnats and aphids (and not enough time to nip that in the bud...) Sad

I started them in a sunny window...no artificial lights. We are currently experiencing triple digits and the upper 90s here in my neck of the woods. My seedlings are still pretty small so I think I might wait another month or so before planting them outside. It may take me that long to get a bed ready for them anyway.

wow triple digits Missouri, is that normal? I figured at most you'd only reach upper 90's. follow your intuition it won't steer you wrong.
Mayo use this product for gnats. the larvae of the gnats will damage your daylily seedlings.
