The iris forum has a thread for 'goner' irises, which was an interesting way to create a list of (and mourn, if you will) the losses.

It is hard to say with certainty just yet, but I think I only lost one daylily this year...actually, I lost it last fall, likely due to high winds that caused an open crack in the roots, beneath the surface, where bacteria likely got in and slowly destroyed it. It was in terrible shape last November when I moved it to better soil (hoping against hope). The sad part is that it was my absolute FAVORITE one, though, and is the most expensive to replace. My poor...

TITAN OF ICE

I will likely try to get it again because I will miss its giant (near-) white blooms, but I do have pollen and some seedlings out of TITAN OF ICE, so it's possible I may end up with TOI babies that I love even more than TOI. We'll see.

The only one I lost for sure is Elfin Illusion. Never did well for me and never bloomed so I don't really miss it. I'd moved it last Fall into an expanded bed with some other dls that weren't doing well. It looks like all the others survived. I moved Beautiful Edgings into its spot since it was getting out competed in a pot with Dot Paul.

I should have some idea about other iffy ones in the next couple of weeks.

Elena, sorry to hear about Elfin Illusion. In glad it wasn't one of your favorites, though. I hope your Beautiful Edgings thrives in its new spot, that one would be a shame to lose. I love my BE and breathed a little sigh of relief when I saw its leaves poking up several days ago.

FYI they're sold out for this season but Northern Lights had Titan of Ice for a very reasonable price.

I lost Raspberry Beret after moving it from a pot to a raised bed. I doubt it is coming back. It was a rust bucket, so not a great loss for me.

I also lost Calgary Stampede which I never got to see bloom. No idea what killed it unless I planted it too deep and it got root rot. I may have to replace it down the road.

Everything else is still alive ....

But .... the saddest loss of all is my aviatar seedling. Don't know what happened but it's gone. It was one I was evaluating and had a name for, but low and behold .... it appears to have perished. Crying

I can see why evaluating a seedling 3 years is important. Glare

I lost one this year, Indian Giver. It was new to the garden last year, and luckily cheap to replace. I can't say what happened to it though, as we had a very mild winter and all other named and unnamed DL are doing great. It had done well throughout the summer and into fall; no signs that it was going to kick the bucket.

Becky, how sad for you to lose that one. It was a beauty! Did you manage to get any seeds from it? This would be the only consolation that I could think of Sighing!

DND, sure would hate to lose one as nice as TOI, especially when I read your reports in the database about how much you loved that one in particular...bet there are ten others that you'd have given up in its place!

Yes, I am so sad about that seedling. I was going to name it in honor of my sis who is fighting cancer. Of all my seedlings, that is the only one that I did NOT want to lose. Murphy's Law.

I did indeed cross it numerous times and am currently growing out some young seedlings. Maybe one of those will wind up being the perfect replacement. I can only hope ....

And in the back of my mind, I am holding out hope that it went dormant and will surprise me with Sping growth. Though I am not holding my breath. Sticking tongue out

Becky, that's horrible! I'm so sorry about your seedling.

Regina, thank you. I'm tickled to hear you read my report on TOI and that it made an impact.

I tried the Northern lights website about an hour ago but it didn't load for some reason. I'm going to try again, though. I might also see if anyone in my area has a fan or two to sell since I got it locally last year.

I actually just noticed that Heavenly Gardens has it for $35 a DF. Not terrible. It's a beauty - I almost added it myself when ordering earlier in the year but I restrained myself.

I haven't noticed any losses this year but I haven't done a full walk through. We also had a pretty mild winter.

I'm surprised you lost this one. I grew it for years (zone 9b) and it was a real garden thug. Smiling It's a great garden and breeding plant - lovely blooms on sturdy scapes with FAST increase. Sinfully fertile both ways, too. Don't be afraid to try it again. It should do very well for you.

'Gloucester' died of crown rot.

I still have some of it in a different area, but won't be using it to hybridize with any more.
Only about 10% of 'Gloucester' seedlings made it through root rot testing last summer.

Definitely too soon here, they're all still underground and currently being re-covered with snow! I know I've said this before, but don't be too quick to give up on a no show. I remember learning that the hard way, and a hybridizer in my region told me, when I first got into daylilies, don't give up on them until at least June or July. Of course most of you are way ahead in growth so maybe not as late as that for you. I also learned, again the hard way, not to go poking around to find out what happened to them and definitely don't dig them up to give them some TLC. Doing that seems to push them over the edge from just hanging on, and on the road to potential recovery, to croaking. If they have a problem their first winter like that it doesn't necessarily mean they'll have a problem in subsequent winters.

I have one that appeared very late one year, I was sure it was dead and had ear-marked the spot for a new daylily then, around July I think, it surfaced just as I was about to plant something else there. This was many years ago and it hasn't done that since.

Sue - Thanks for that reminder. I have left the empty spots alone for now...... in desperate hope that they do emerge (especially my seedling and Calgary Stampede). So far, nothing to indicate that there is anything left. Slight mounds where they each once were have disappeared as if the roots have died and the soil mound has deflated. So I am holding on to hope, but not feeling very confident about them reappearing at this point.

I will say though that I have several that went completely dormant this year in other raised beds (seedlings) and they are poking their leaves up now after I figured they might be gone, too. So who knows?

Thanks for the advice Sue. I suspected Elfin Illusion croaked last Fall so I wasn't that concerned about digging around where it was planted. As expected, I found nothing. But I have several dls that haven't started growing yet and they have me worried. Beautiful Edgings looks dead but I dug up to transplant it (it desperately needed more space) and the roots in 6 fans were healthy. So I'm assuming that if the roots look good they will recover.

Elena, it is the crown that you need to be concerned about, it can be dead even if the roots still look OK. If the crown is firm then it may well come back. If the crown is dead (rotten) right through then it won't survive, even if the roots look good. I imagine, though, that you're including crown collectively when you say roots?

I purchased 'Beautiful Edgings' by mail order in 2014 and it arrived in fall and I don't usually plant here in fall because of the severe winters. I was rather worried because of that late planting, and it was a particularly nasty winter. Not only did it survive but it flowered last year. So it's pretty tough.
