Tabby, I just noticed your link to your semp photos on photobucket - wow are those beautiful!! I love when you can follow along for a couple seasons and see how different an individual plant looks depending on the temperature, moisture, amount of light etc.
And you take great photos so you can really see these changes!
Thank you! Hurray! Hurray!

I agree How exciting! And there are babies around to still have some! (I'm assuming that these plants are also monocarpic, but as soon as I post this I'm going to wikipedia to verfy! ) Sticking tongue out

Yes, they are monocarpic. Each little rosette that blooms will die. Some are more prolific than others.

Right! Have to make sure they have babies before they go! I did read that they also reseed readily, I wonder if different types do this more readily than others?
Anyway, they sure are lovely little plants! Hurray!

Here's a couple that are about to bloom. The first pot I started from seed 3 years ago. Not sure of the species. I got it from a seed exchange and it was labeled as Orostachys sp. The second I bought as O. spinosum from Arrowhead Alpines.

Awesome photos Mark. What did you do to grow them from seed? Time of year? Soil, etc.?

I started them in February under lights. I used a soilless mix with some added grit. put a thin layer of grit on the surface and sowed the seed on the grit. I had them on a heat mat but I don't think it's necessary. The seed is tiny just like Semp. seed. I use a 3 1/2 inch pot with a baggie over it. They take a month give or take to germinate.
Here's a close up.

Now you burst my bubble. I was so excited about having a plant like that in 5 or 6 months from seed. Rolling my eyes.
