Nice one Larry! I really like the form and black velvet, how does it hold up to your sun/heat? Sometimes the velvet will slick in high heat/sun.

Another extra large pattern kid Fred, awesome. When you register one I will be wanting to try it in the north Thumbs up

Char, I meant to take a photo of it later this afternoon, but somehow I did not. However, I watched it all day long, with the petals being pounded by strong gusty winds all day ( seemed much cooler than the temp showed). I looked at it late this afternoon and amazingly it was still intact and looking very good. It was a clear sunny day but the high for the day was only 72 F. So I can say that as big as the bloom was the scape and the bloom withstood pretty strong gusty winds all day. It did not fade in the sun today, but that is not a true test because it has been so cool here for the past few days.
I will mention that I did have a first bloom on Soothsayer (actually a second bloom) and the first one looked the same, even early in the morning the dumb thing looked totally faded. Hope that is not a normal color for the blooms.

Well, all I can say is that I haven't seen a seedling yet that I didn't like! Keep those baby photos coming!

I've a couple more new ones to share photos of. I haven't gotten the stats on the newest one that bloomed today. Between rainy weather and work ... I've been too busy!

C001 (Laughing Clown x Zanti Misfit) - 2nd year bloomer, 29" scapes, 6 1/2" blooms, 3 branches with 19 buds each on a nice looking small clump. (Last year's blooms were 7" on a 30" scape with 16 buds, so even though the scape and bloom size decreased slightly, the bud count went up.) :

Thumb of 2016-05-06/beckygardener/0a890a

DDD13 - (Mystic Image x Game Face). I haven't had time to record the stats on this one. I also expect the blooms to improve given who it's parents are. Seeds came from Yardman on the LA.:

And the previously posted seedling has been blooming like crazy. Here's a photo from this morning.

Nice seedlings everyone.
Nights are in the high 40s and low 50s again, not so good for daylilies to open.

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Here is the 1st bloom ever from a seedling. I don't think there's too much hope, but it's got 14 more chances to improve. It may improve, but I think it has too far to go. Only one good petal? A 'Tusk' bloom was doing some of the same thing today, so it might be weather related. We got really cool at night this week. The pod was from 'Wild Horses'. Odds are good that the pollen came via 'French Twist' because it mostly was my 'go to' for pollen on tetraploid blooms, but 'Serge Rigaud' and 'Primal Scream' were also used. I think I ended up with about half a dozen pods which I also didn't keep separate. Not to mention there were hundreds of little sweat bees grabbing pollen and might have been working with a different agenda than mine. 'WH' was not one I tried to keep up with except for recording what pollen I used every day. I used paper clips and bread ties on other crosses, but even on some of those, the marker got off the pods occasionally - squirrels, birds, wind, or just not getting them attached well enough - I don't know. It's fun to do and I have really low expectations anyway. Hilarious!

Donald, I admire your sense of humor.

I really enjoy seeing the seedlings. Thanks to all who posted. Fred, you have a couple of nice ones with parents I've recently added. It's great to see what they're producing.

Here's the first bloom ever on a seedling I'm trialing for Dan Hansen. He was kind enough to send me several of his doubles seedlings last fall.
Hansen 3DBM
The color isn't as clean as I'd like, which means it has a little "munge" (ask Gardenglory if you need to know more about this technical term we learned from Dan H. and David Kirchhoff), but I like the form and it's in the early season. I'm going to hit it with something like Joan Jackson to try to dominate the color a bit. This is a rose color over a yellow base. Do you think adding a very dark color will help? Also, I think the sepals will straighten out and not canoe as the season progresses.

A few more new seedlings blooming today. I love it when I see scapes emerging from deep within the fans! It makes my day to know more are to come. Smiling

Here is 3 more new seedlings (and a repeat of more blooms of a 4th one):

DDD21 (Ruffles A La Mode x Gram's Dream) - This is one I have anticipated from seeds I received from Cindy (hemlady). It had a bit of a hard time opening this morning (as did all of them) because of the cooler night temps:

This morning's bloom:

Before sunset bloom:

Thumb of 2016-05-07/beckygardener/57ba20

Another seedling bloom is ZZZ37 Another of Cindy's seeds. Galaxy Explosion x Lily Munster. Second year of blooms.

Late afternoon:

Thumb of 2016-05-07/beckygardener/6aecc0

And once again another of Cindy's seeds ZZZ47. Galaxy Explosion x Lily Munster sibling. This is the first bloom from this seedling.

Late afternoon:

Thumb of 2016-05-07/beckygardener/a24300

The Galaxy Explosion x Lily Munster cross foliage is clean. No sign of rust on any of them. The Ruffles A La Mode x Gram's Dream does show some thrip and rust damage. Not bad, but it does have some rust on the leaves.

The more I see this 2nd year bloomer seedling grow, the more I really like it. I remember this one bloomed and bloomed for me last year and then re-bloomed. I didn't record any rust on it and am not seeing any rust on it so far this year. Ironically, I wrote down "not pod fertile" in my notes, so I need to verify that issue this year and try to set some pods on it. The height is what I prefer. The red color with bright yellow throat is another thing I like about it. It's not a fancy face, but it sure shows up in the garden. This was my first one to bloom last year. CCC01 (new photos from today):

CCC01 (Laughing Clown x Zanti Misfit):

Thank you, Leslie!

What I am discovering is that many of the fancy faced daylilies often do not have good rust resistance. I envy what Fred and other hybridizers are getting from some amazing crosses. Just beautiful!!! Lovey dubby

Mayo

And one that wasn't so wonderful, eh? Big Grin

I'm not sure the age of a seedling is all there is to it. That one of mine is a two year plant, but it only got out of a tiny pot crowded with siblings less than 2 months ago. Happily for it, it was one of the larger plants and certainly got roomier quarters to live in than any of the siblings, some of which only got a 6" container. That was still a lot more root room than they had prior to that. It'll be easier to step them up to a larger container if it's just a single plant. It took a lot of soaking, power washing and pulling and untangling to get a pot full of seedling roots separated. Under those conditions, It might take anywhere from 5 years to never to see one attempt to bloom. Bad as that bloom is, it came a lot sooner than I expected.

Even if they are given spacious housing from the start, I think factors like weather, moisture etc. - not to mention genetics - would figure into how soon you seen a seedling produce initial bloom.
