Thanks for the link to the post, Becky! That one definitely sounds like a nice seedling. 6.5" inches is a good size bloom.

I agree with you about the solid colors, which is why I gravitate to the solid color daylilies. Bolder blooms have a lot of landscaping potential, whereas I feel like detailed blooms are more interesting if there are only one or two as focal plants or they are set aside in a special area as plants that you go up to to view closely. Although I do go up to all of my plants individually, my front-yard plants are all a variety of bold, good-for-landscaping daylilies. The small handful of more-detailed daylilies are in my backyard.

I have a question on your lovely pink seedling, Becky. You say that it took 2 days to fully open? How was the substance on it - was the flower good once it finally opened, or was it already starting to melt and fall apart? Confused

I have a new seedling which is very half-heartedly looking like it is trying to to open today, but it is not open. Glare Please give me hope that it will be open tomorrow, and in good shape (because this thing, although not the color that I want, has a couple of poly buds on it).

Polymerous - I was expecting a half wilted bloom. Nope! It looked perfect to me. There is another bud on it doing the exact same thing.

Here is what it looks like at the very end of the day:

A diploid seedling from a cross supposed to be of (Cat's Cradle X Green Arrow) today. I'll really like this one if it manages to flatten out those petals. I hope that's due to our strange cool weather. Temp was 55F when I took the photo. Yesterday afternoon I had to find a jacket to wear! I have four other daylilies trying to open blooms today and they haven't managed to do it. At least this one opened. It's a big bloom and if the wind blows I'll probably need to stake the scape. It's a day-glo color which the camera didn't quite pick up under the cloudy skies, but the color isn't one to be overlooked. Maybe if the sun comes out, I'll try another photo. Silly plant has made a proliferation on the scape. That's really optimistic behavior from a seedling that hasn't bloomed before Big Grin .

One of my favorite seedlings that bloomed last year is blooming now. Last year it was a small, pathetic looking little thing. This year it has increased but is still producing small blooms with short scapes, and low foliage. I think this plant is a "smaller" daylily seedling. No rust, 17" tall scapes, 4 1/2" blooms, 4 fans, 3 scapes, 2 branches with 7 blooms. I am rather tickled that it appears to be a small variety seedling! Wished my other small and mini dips would hurry up and bloom as I want to cross them with this one! It's a cutie!

Optimistic behavior sounds like a good name for that one. Amazing
to get a prolif so soon. Very nice bloom as well.
@beckygardener
Very lovely, and I've seen some take 3 days to open when
very ruffled, and your 4.5 bloom is nice also, especially with the great stats.
@ganinfl
That's a nice bold color you received with that swap. Pretty.

Becky, it looks like you hit the extended bloom with long opening jackpot there! Rolling on the floor laughing

Yesterday's FFO miserable seedling finally more or less opened by very late afternoon....more or less because it was somewhat chalice shaped, and one petal was stuck upright. To add the frosting to that particular cake, overall the bloom color was a muddy pale apricot or peach or something. Glare What I should have done was to leave it on the scape and see if it opened further today, but I was so disappointed in it (given the couple of poly buds on the scape) that I didn't even take a picture of it, and I live-headed it when I did the other daylilies last night. (I don't live-head everything... anything near to and easily visible from the back of the house I leave for evening viewing enjoyment, and deadhead the next day.)

This morning brought in another disappointment, on another seedling that has 2 of 4 buds as poly buds. (The buds get a bit of a red tint as they approach bloom, which at least is interesting.) This morning's FFO was a traditional 3x3 bloom; the color is a muddy red, the mud presumably from the pod parent. The bloom has a narrow light midrib too. Glare And the bloom splotched. Crying

I am going to have to think carefully about how (and/or IF) to proceed from these two seedlings (and the only reason to do so is because they are tets with some poly buds, so hopefully they are at least partially polymerous... presuming this isn't yet another false alarm, and they never poly again after this season Rolling my eyes. ).

I may get attached to the (Cat's Cradle X Green Arrow) seedling. It did get better as the day progressed. I was working around it nearly all day and did enjoy it nodding . A better face photo and a side view.

I did stake it. I didn't have to that today and the stake doesn't go very high up the scape, but it gets really windy here most of the time and I assumed it probably would do that today, so I put the stake on it. I don't think this seedling has anything like true growth yet. It's fairly recent to being alone in a bigger container. I didn't expect it to bloom at all, frankly, and in another season I'd expect the scape to be both taller and stronger. It's not very weak as it is, but our weather has been fractious lately.

I was surprised to see this pop up in the seedlings yesterday. It's not unique from many pinks out there but I like it. I wonder if it may develop a ruffly edge when it's mature.
