We had a course in thermodynamics, once, and were given many formulas to memorize.

One of the questions was directly exactly at remembering those formulas: "if A and B and C are the case then it all boils down to 'D varies linearly with E'".

As if I could remember anything for more than five minutes!

But they had stated all the conditions, and I DID had the underlying principles memorized, so i could expand the stated question into a MUCH more complicated question that I COULD answer! It took me around a half page of math to re-derive the wheel, and THEN I could say that 'D varies linearly with E'.

But if you ask me for directions, it usually contains some part like "and then you turn East ... umm ... or West ... umm, one of those two."

Okay, there you and I are different. I rarely use cardinal directions, not since I lived in the 'colorful' state. There, the mountains were always west, so I could get my bearings. Anywhere else, though, directions sound more like "go past the library, pass two stoplights, and it's down on the right just past the 7-1; and if you hit the blue house, you've gone too far."

Karen -- I grew Amish Paste last year and I was happy with them. This year was absolutely terrible for my tomatoes. I still haven't managed to save any tomato seeds this year.

Erica - I've had the same problem. I had 2 weeks worth of canning and then they all died. I'm waiting now to see if at least a couple will pop up just for saving. I think this problem lies in our weather this year. We went from the 70s to the 90s this year. Hard for maters to grow properly like that. I've decided to try something new this year. Any recommendations? We love acidic tomatoes.

Karen -- I've had very good luck with Tommy Toe, Black Plum, Gold Rush Currant, and Coyote in the past. Those have all made it on my list of "will grow again." I'm not sure if you're also on Houzz, but Katie (kchd) did some great tomato reviews a couple months ago. Like us, she also deals with the heat. Here's one of her postings:

As for my favorite tomatoes for the heat, here's a short list:
Eva Purple Ball
Green Zebra
Anna Russian
Stump of the World
JDs Special C Tex

Thanks ya'll for the suggestions. I do have the Tommy toes marked but I left the tiny time because I thought you put them up for someone else. If they don't get snagged I'll grab them jim.

Erica I do trade and whatnot at gw. I've just not been on in awhile. I'll check kc's review out. Now is the time, lol.

I saw that Franchi got their garlic in stock, so I placed another order.

• 1 x Garlic Rosso - Certified Naturally Grown (Amount: .5 pounds)
• 1 x Bean Rocquencourt (60-23) (Size: 100 grams) (French Bush bean, yellow wax, 55 DTM)
• 1 x Valeriana d'Olanda (140-3) (Size: 20 grams) (Mache, Corn Salad)
• 1 x Radish Burro Gigante (MGM 112-34) (Giant Butter Radish, heirloom from Sardenia. Stays mild.
• 1 x Radish Flamboyant 3 (112-25) (Not spicy. 28-32 days. 4" long, red with white tip)

None of these will be here for THIS swap (3 days, Sept. 10), and I don;t think I'll get enough garlic cloves to share.
But the others are largish packets, and will show up in future seed swaps.

I seem to be in a phase where I "collect beans". Mostly pole beans, but I wanted to try a gourmet French bean selected by Italians. If that means it has to be a bush bean, so be it!

I like GROWING radishes, but don't like spicy, hot ones. Hence the big, mild radish seeds.

In theory, I have some OP Daikon radish seeds advertised as "mild", but now I think that must have meant something like: "For a hot, spicy radish, this is not VERY hot." Or, maybe it meant: "If you are making nuclear Kim-Chee, these are not THE hottest Daikons in the world, so look again."

Or I grew it poorly and the heat was its stress-response. But even when I have volunteers, those Daikons are always too hot for me.

Rick it is fun mostly to grow the beans , becaue of space I usually grow the old ones for a better crop

Radishes I eat the leaves in salads from the hot ones . I try to collect a few that grow but the past fe seasons not many ,

Today I have a red or white Echinacea (coneflower ) sprouted from seeds here . My Maximillion sunflower started blooming today ,
Bok choy is looking okay I seem to trying to grow enough to eat This time of year ,I am coming up short
Off and on I am outside only it is extremely hot here again , Makes plants taste bad , and wears me out ,,
A weed note ,, lots of Burdock and nettle for tea ,,

Speaking of beans.... I harvested my limas today and started shelling. But, I have an odd question. Rick, why do you like pole beans versus bush? I grow bush simply because I hate the poles in my gardens. I know, I plant my garden like a flower bed almost. At least after I decide what I'm going to plant and which row. I change it up every year but I have to have my rows clean. It literally makes me crazy not to. And then if I were to add a pole? Ugggh.

Jim, you're doing well to get any bok choy in really hot weather! I would have expected them to bolt in heat, and give you a chance to collect seeds self-selected for bolting early!

>> Rick, why do you like pole beans versus bush? I grow bush simply because I hate the poles in my gardens.

Karen, I guess I start by not caring much about how my garden looks. If it looks like a jungle, I'm thrilled! Things are growing vigorously!

Then, I like seeing tall poles with vines trying to reach the sky. The poles and trellises or stirng are "gadgets", and I love DIY gadgets.

And if I can harvest without stooping, I'm happy.

And I found that, for me, even most "bush" plants need at least one string or stake to help them keep their leaves and pods off the ground.

And I don't care for plants named after our 43rd President or for the sound of a beer can opening.

But mainly, I learned from pole snap peas and pole snow peas that I get 3-5 times as much produce from each square foot if the plants grow vertically.

I have few square feet, and growing UP is one of the few things that my park management (think HOA) can't forbid me to do.

@DogsNDaylilies are you going to do the NARR seed donation again this year? I've come to the conclusion I have too many seeds. I'd be happy to donate but if not I might put some in the classifieds.
