I think i have to agree so far with Melissa sunburn can do that and where it is on the caudex is on the high side. BUT please please please check it that its not mushy under that. like Doris said if it is Mushy you need to take care of that if it feels firm then it should not be rot. I think if it is sunburn i would not clean it up to much mabe a little but i like it when they have interesting marks and this mite in a few months drop some of the peeling and look cool.
you can clean up at any time as long as it you cut into good flesh DO use Cinnamon and dont allow it to rain on it for several days.

Now i like that pot you have it in BUT its a glazed pot so it will not loose much water. so take caution on watering. Also if and when you take a knife to it for any reason make sure you use something to sterilize the blade between every cut so you don't spread rot or disease.

Yes im long winded but i try to explain everything and WHY so you can better understand these plants

so next i see is that pot has a saucer when you water or it rains make sure you empty that or you can get root rot fast.

And do please keep us informed

I agree with Mike, pots with saucers can be death to Adeniums!

coconut said:OK, I guess that it was sunburn that rotted. The caudex looks OK otherwise. Boy, that plant has been pruned and pruned and pruned!

You can either leave it as is, or get an exacto knife and chop down to healthy "flesh", then dust the wound with cinnamon.

I would go ahead and start watering and feeding the plant, but I'd water only on the side of the pot away from that mess. Water half the pot is what I'm saying.

Photos sure make a difference!!! Keep us informed as to what happens in the next few months, OK?

So all those little nubs are where they were pruned before? I had wondered about that. I only pruned it this Spring, the limbs had gotten a bit long and there were no leaves, so I figured what the heck? Ok, so only water sparing, and on the side that hasn't any stress to the caudex (trunk)? I can do that. I will certainly keep you guys informed, thanks for your help!

Not long winded...just well informed!!

I will check for mushiness when I get home tonight. I have it on the ground at the edge of my covered patio. It gets morning mid afternoon Sun, we haven't had much rain at all, otherwise it would probably get some sideways rain once in awhile. And probably only a drink from me every 3-4 days now, once I noticed it was feeling a bit soft, not really spongy, but soft-er than it ever had. I've read where your not supposed to get the leaves wet, is this true?

Sunburn...I'm confused, I've seen pictures of these plants growing in arid desert temps, so presumed mine needed to be outside getting more Sun? Does it sunburn because they were maybe greenhouse grown, not use to the drastic Sun I've exposed it to?

If I decide to cut it...(skeert now to) I will make sure to use sterile blades, and cinnamon...never heard that - how curious!! But if I can get interesting look from that injury, that would be good too!! I don't see water coming out of the bottom much collecting in the saucer, so none ever standing.

Basically I need to ensure I do not have rot, perhaps take it out of the pot with the saucer, maybe go to an orchid pot....I also saw (internet) these people making up pots using some of the strangest materials!! Should I use like perlite, or something similar?

After I've checked that list of to-do's, any suggestions on how to get blooms? I know I maybe moving too fast...but I really want to see it with flowers again, it was so pretty in bloom!!

Thank you all for your suggestions and advice, it's greatly appreciated! Maybe if I get this one going again, I too will start a collection, they make some very pretty plants! Thumbs up

sunburn most the time happens when the plant is not used to the strong rays and yes put right in to the inferno of our sun......needs to be weaned in to the sun. But yes these will do good with full sun if they are used to it makes there skin used to it like us.

water on the leaves ....2 reasons i know people say no ... first if done in late morning/afternoon a water drop is like a magnifying glass it will cause sun damage to the leaves.

second if leaves remain wet to long...like over cool night or like mine over 3-4 days rain and no sun or air movement to dry them GUESS what...i said about wet ...rot i have several that the tips of my plant are rotting I uprooted 20 of my plants and 1 had rot in the roots and all 20 have rot on the tips of the stems.

the plant leaves are sensitive to chemicals so if you spray for bugs or anything like that make sure you wash it off after a while.

i advise you to leave cutting to last resort and re potting just depends on if you can make sure it just dont sit in water. I like to make sure i dont over pot so that they plant sits in wet soil to long I go for 1 1/2 in bigger on both sides and 4 in deeper then they roots....but i dont mind re-potting more often like 1 time a year is fine with me.

good luck and ttysoon
