Mike, I am surprised that your August Flame and Back to School have finished blooming before mine since yours are growing in zone 5b and mine in 6b. Very curious.

Still a few species daylilies blooming here with Hemerocallis multiflora yet to start (last year it didn't open many flowers before the frost got it but they seem a little earlier this year) and H. citrina with a few left to open. Currently the most floriferous is H. hakuunensis. A strikingly bright colour in the garden at this time of year.

Hemerocallis hakuunensis in bloom today, USDA Zone 4.

Thanks Smiling I think it's a fraction more orangey in real life than the picture but it flowers for a long time with lots open at a time and quite a few more still to come even this late, I really like it. I don't know what it's like for breeding but it certainly has some attributes in itself.

Elena,

Your very late season bloomers are lovely. How do you happen to have so many unregistered very late bloomers? Are you hybridizing for this season of bloom?

@csandt I purchased several unregistered late blooming daylilies from Olallie. They have a nice selection of dips.

I do cross my late daylilies. I have several now that bloom late in the season but the one blooming today is the best performer.

I love being able to do crosses this late in the season! I just have to remember to harvest the pods in October. I missed one or two last year. *Blush*

Wow! Hybriding daylilies in NYC? I am picturing you carving out a little gardening space on top of the Empire State Building. Smiling

@csandt, I'm lucky in that I don't live in Manhattan. I live in the "outer boroughs" so I have a backyard. Mind you, it's tiny compared to what most everyone else on this forum gets to garden. While others can plant hundreds of seedlings a year I can plant 20-30 at most and that's only because a little over half die the first winter.

And I need to correct my post, Watermelon Summer has finished blooming for the year. I think it had something to do with a thunderstorm we had that knocked the scape over into a tomato plant and the Emilia. I'm still getting bud drop but not as much as I did earlier this season.

Hemerocallis multiflora, FFO this morning so very late. Downside is small plain flower, upsides are extreme lateness and it really lives up to its name of multiflora, tons of buds.

Not the best picture and definitely not database material, my iPad didn't want to focus for some reason and there was a breeze moving the scape but it gives an idea.
