@Barbalee , what are the seedlings growing in, it looks like those little newspaper pots one can make? Some of them are lifted above the potting mix surface. Is it possible the roots are not getting out into the main pots through the smaller "pots"?

@Sooby, I started some in Jiffy pots, but then I broke open the bottoms of those and put them in seedling mix. The roots should have no problem getting through...they just need to grow! Thank you for asking.

If you've used this method successfully before then ignore me Hilarious! but I'm not too keen on the peat pots (or are these the mesh ones?). I find they don't break down all that quickly, and also when the top of them sticks up above whatever they're planted in, it is said to wick moisture away from the plant roots. So when I've had to plant larger plants from a nursery that come in the big peat pots that can't be removed, I always snap off the rim so that the plant can be set with the top of the peat pot flush with or slightly below the soil surface.

Daylily roots grow out sideways as much as they grow down and I'm just wondering if the peat pot will restrict them. Like I said, if you've had success doing it this way before, just ignore me.... Smiling

Mighty fine seedlings, Regina. They really look like they're doing well.

@sooby if I may, I'm using those jiffy pots as well. They do have a mesh net around the peat and I've noticed that some of the roots, grew down the sides. Then when reaching the bottom they shot out. Others, roots did come out the sides. Thanks for the hint about whisking moisture from the exposed netting. I'd not thought of that one and will add a little more soil to cover the tops. This is the second year I've used these and had success, knocking on wood.

Barbalee, I do water almost everyday as the sprinkler for the lawn, over laps the bedding areas.
Fred says every other day with water and as long as the temps are above, (if I remember correct) 40f in the winter he foliar feeds them. But he will tell you that the water is most important. He really pushes his seedlings, so I am too!

These are the ones I was thinking of, Stan, rather than the ones with mesh:

I would also speculate that the peat sides would not disintegrate as quickly when planted in a soilless mix as opposed to in garden soil because of differences in the levels of decomposition microorganisms.

I agree I'm not a fan of peat pots they really don't break down as fast as they claim but those are peat pellets as Stan pointed out.

I just got some wonderful seeds from Fred (Spunky1) on Wednesday. I wanted just a few crosses involving smaller daylilies, mostly crosses including THE ONE RING which did not bloom for me this spring, and here is what I won:

FASHION ICON x THE ONE RING
SDLG #HB02-16 x THE ONE RING
MOON SWORN x THE ONE RING
LILLIAN'S RAINBOW AT DAWN x THE ONE RING
HB36-13 x HB01-17
BLUE & WHITE FLYCATCHER x LILLIAN'S LEGENDS & LIES

And he included extra seeds of the crosses plus 3 seeds of the cross LILLIAN'S BABY FOR A DAY x THE ONE RING as gifts -- WOW! Thank you so much Fred!

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray! Betty. I have some of Fred's seeds, as a matter of fact about 50% of mine. Whistling

Thanks Sue.
I've. Seen those but haven't used any of them. Thanks for sharing the link. Thumbs up and for the warning about those. My seedlings are planted in a mix comprised of a Stagreen garden soil, mushroom compost, peletized lime, Milorganite and alfalfa pellets. Haven't checked the ph lately but it was just a tad on the higher side, about a 7. I believe that once the lime starts to be abosoarbed into the soil mix it'll drop to ideal. Guess I had better check. Crossing Fingers!

I'm not impressed with the jiffy pots, either. Those are the mesh ones, but I think they do constrain the roots too much despite my ripping out the bottom. Nonetheless, I thought it was worth a shot on a few of them...not doing it again, though!!

I'm watering every other day, but now I'm going to add the fertilizer once a week. @GaNinFl, what is "foliar feeding"? Newbie speaking here!!

@Barbalee just a fancy name for liquid fertilizer sprayed on the leaves. I usually spray until the soil is wet too, that way it feed the roots too. But thats my rookie idea of what foliar feeding is.

During the last three weeks, I have received two shipments from Fred, Spunky1, and one shipment from James, JWWC, which I have not germinated yet. There will be one more shipment from Fred as soon as I send him payment, which will be later today.

I want to add new genetics to my breeding without buying so many more new plants. Sounds good, does it not? In reality, some of us like the exhilaration of the bidding, and the release of endorphins give us a natural high, that regardless of the cost of the bid, it is still cheaper than drugs.
