I do not use Penzey's. And they have a store not too far away. I do not like their Americanized blends. As long as you are ordering on-line there are so many other better merchants out there. Gene

Speaking of serving sizes - a game they play to make the numbers look lower than they really are. People might look at calories or fat on the label but without referencing serving size it means nothing. Bush's Best Baby Butter Beans. 16 oz. can. Servings Per Container = 3.5. WHAT? This is just silly. Labels should say: Here is what is in this container. Gene

Gene ...

The same can used to contain 4 servings for the same price, but now has 3.5 servings. Less product for the same price. No inflation.

I get your point gene but it does help to give you a " visual "

Mentally dividing that can's contents into 3-4 portions brings the calories, fat and salt Home...even if it just feeds two people when all is said and done

I just bought some cans of sweet corn with no salt. None. They are out there. Keep looking and reading labels. Gene

Yes, my Kroger carries a lot of no-salt-added veggies. So does Trader Joe's. In fact, TJ's has a printed list in their stores of their low sodium products, like spaghetti sauce, soups, salsas...

I see low salt and ones labeled 'no added salt'. Haven't seen ones that say absolutely no salt.

I still buy what's on sale and just rinse them. I may still get a bit of salt, but not that much. They charge extra for the "no-salt" option. Go figure.

Yes, when they first came out with no salt crackers they were more expensive. I just got 16 oz. canned sweet corn, no salt, $.60 a can. Gene

They're the same price as the regular at Kroger. But you're right, Rita, most things have at least a little salt, often naturally occurring.

I kind of made up tonight's dinner as I went. The basic idea was to recreate lasagna, minus the pasta for my diabetic husband. It was spaghetti squash lasagna boats. I cooked the spaghetti squash whole in the microwave, let it cool, then cut in half and seeded. I removed the "spaghetti" from the squash, mixed it well in a casserole with ricotta, shredded mozarella and parm. I browned a little meat in skillet, added a little jar of pizza sauce, chopped fresh mushrooms, garlic, seasonings. Then I layered the spaghetti squash noodle/ cheese mix back into the shell, and layered with the meat sauce and topped with more shredded cheese. After baking, topped with chiffonade of fresh basil. It was good! Even my picky husband liked it. We had it with a big salad, and could only eat half of our lasagna boats.

Sounds good, Karen.

Altho' I have vowed never to buy another spaghetti squash again ... Hilarious! , it does sound good. I did look up other no-noodle lasagna recipes on Allrecipes and there are a couple I might try.

Thanks for the idea ... Smiling

I guess this time of the year may not yield many Healthy Eating posts. New one I am trying, so far , so good. I only use about a teaspoon of sugar a month but it has been Agave Syrup. Now it seems it is worse than High Fructose. So I sought out an alternative. Just got some Granulated Honey from Spice Jungle. Easily dissolves in water. Does not burn in baking. I like it. One thing that I have always avoided in a spice blend is sugar. Bought one the other day that did have sugar in it and I liked it. Probably because it was unlike any other blend I have. Barrier Reef from Savory Spice Shop. Great stuff. Fabulous in eggs. Now I am making my own BR blend starting with G. Honey, orange zest, lemon peel, savory, allspice, ginger, a little red Hatch chili powder. Nice. Gene

Probably not much posting in the Healthy Eating Thread as we have all been stuffing ourselves with Thanksgiving dinner and then Thanksgiving dinner leftovers.

I give myself a pass from watching my diet for Holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. I am good most of the time but not then. I don't even try.

Gene, you're not supposed to EAT the bones.....................LOL Seriously, sorry to hear that. My parents gifted me with less than stellar teeth, and as a kid I had a couple of barbaric dentists. However, thanks to a WONDERFUL dentist in the last 20 years, I still have all my teeth. Several root canals and crowns, but, hey.............I still got 'em. Green Grin!

And another tooth last night. Just when I thought I might get back to solid food. Anyways, I'm at the check out and the woman behind me is buying 18 cans of guava nectar. I asked what she was going to do with it all. I was thinking some kind of party punch perhaps. My kids love it and I don't want them drinking pop. I said I should probably not tell you this but fruit juice can have as much or more sugar than pop does. Not to mention the price difference. 12 oz. can of guava nectar = 41g of sugar. Gene

I use raw honey, organic palm sugar or Lucuma (made from fruit) in very small amounts to sweeten just slightly. I've been on a low-sugar regimen so long my body adjusted and if I do try to eat or drink anything very sweet it tastes horrible to me. My deceased grandfather was diabetic and lost one leg from that, but so far nobody else in the family has had it.
I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. E. B.White
