I made two pentas cutting just like a coleus cutting. I found stems with no flower buds. I trimmed some leaves and stuck them with a bare node and the base of the next branching node in the soil. We'll see. They look happy 4 days later.
The master gardener came (library) and used rooting hormone on all of her houseplant cuttings- even a single pothos leaf without even any stem or node, just a section of the petiole. It must work, but I'd much rather take stem ends and have it look like a whole plant a lot sooner.
Plant it and they will come.

Life is "mind over matter". If I d
Sally--
We had a half-table full of Pentas at the HD. I love the white ones and have some
in my AC bed...I hope they are still there....
One day, I dead-headed all the Pentas at work. bell was goint to chuck them.
They lasted a bit longer...bloomed on.
But--still--as fall crops took priority--they pentas all got tossed.

I usually get a couple new ones at Md. Flower and Foliage in spring. ( $3 ea).
Rooting a cutting would help...
Since both the Braz. Plume and the Persian Shield rooted so easily (Swap)
I wonder how they would do inside??? Sometimes the space taken up
is not worth having rooted a bunch of plants. But--it is tempting as an experiment...
My 2 BR. Plumes are huge,,,have to think what I really want to do with them at this time. Whistling

If the Pentax cuttings were still alive after 4 days, they probably had lived. How are they doing now, Sally?

Most of my viburnum cuttings have lost their leaves. I pulled them out, and saw no signs of root development Sad . Guess it is just the wrong time of year to try to root them.

The Abutilon cuttings now have nice roots that are visible through the clear cups. Big Grin

I rooted the only Rhododendron ‘Fantastica’ cutting that I was able to get from the plant. All other branches have flower buds on them. The plant had a good drink of rainwater overnight last night. Hopefully that will help the cutting to survive. We will see.

None of my cuttings sans jasmines took Sighing! Hoping that it was simply wrong time of year. I can say I will have a litter of toddler NBJ for anyone else interested. Soooo easy to root. Take cutting - remove bottom sets of leaves - shove in soil...whaaa laaa! Hurray!

Sally,
I'd taken some cutting late for the swap and they dropped their leaves.
I really thought they were gonners. But they came back to life and
put out new leaves after a while....

Bonsai trees will drop their leaves when really stressed, to save their
selves from trying to keep the leaves fed, then they grow them back
when the stress is gone... Maybe your viburnum are like that... Crossing Fingers!

Hi all, I am terrible, just finished doing my taxes! I am exhausted!

Anyway, those of you who want more cuttings of the Viburnums, I will get more of them. They are plenty, I will bring them with the Spring swap, if Frenchy is going and if she is willing to give me a ride to New Jersey! So do not worry. If we are not going, I can come and meet you somewhere in Maryland in June, or, maybe I should cut them in June, so the cuttings will grow!

@Shy_gardner what plant was it? I would love to know if someone has rooted Viburnums successfully.

@tantefrancine. Thank you! I would love to give it another try next year if cuttings are available. The cuttings didn't root this time. Confused I will stop trying if I fail again. Don't want to keep on taking branches off your plants Sticking tongue out .

Oh No sorry, these were not viburnums (I've never rooted viburnums)... I was referring to other plants I had around here
.... The late summer ones were Honeysuckle & Crepe Myrtle cutting.

I've rooted small (very small) hard wood cuttings from my Bonsai Trees like Chinese Elm, Bald Cypress, Junipers, and Yews in spring, I'd pick cuttings that had new growth coming on when I started them.

Wow! You have rooted a lot of plants, Donna! I have never tried to root hardwood cuttings.

I still have not rooted Brugs yet. Both Dr S and Maya are laden with flower buds which will only need another 24 hours to open. However, that's the 24 hours I probably won't have. Sad Tomorrow's day time high will only be in the 50s with strong wind. Grumbling I may have to cut down the plants and take cuttings tomorrow.

Sally,

Sorry to hear about your Brugs...So close...They look like they are going to be gorgeous, sure are covered in blooms... Can you put them right up against your house until they bloom? Can you bring them in like they are, just so they can bloom? Be nice to enjoy the labor of all your hard work.....

I used to root and pot lots of anything I could use for Bonsai. But it takes way to much space... And my children's friends childrens, childrens children may really not like Bonsai... cause that's how long it takes for some of those to be of any kind of decent size... (EDIT: And I say hard wood, I call anything that's not bendable soft, a hard wood cutting.. so I may be actually taking soft wood cuttings)

I'd belonged to a great Bonsai Group and they would get permission to dig up tree's that were destined to be destroyed in development sites. Saves the trees and then you already have something with some substantial size to start with. I have some really nice American Hornbeams from those digs...

I have to say I don't take many cutting any more.... But the good thing about being on this site it that it intrigues you, to keep your hands in growing something...

Dang, my smaller Brugmansia took a hit when temperatures dropped last night. Looks pitiable now. Big leaves are droopy and wrinkly but small ones don't look so awful. Is this a plant that is likely to rebound? Or probably a goner?

@5601Lisa I was just gonna say....give it some time, it's probably fine. I literally just pulled my Dr. Seuss brug inside tonight. Yesterday was simply too long of a day...and I have to say I was a lil concerned when I realized how far down the dang temps dipped last night. Same with my big NBJs....but by the time I came upstairs tonight - they already looked better. The townhouse officially resembles a jungle at this point...but mercy does it smell yummee inside!!! Lovey dubby

I still have a few pots and HB's on the deck, but they're against the side of the house. Looks safe to wait until next week to get the tropical waterlilies inside. I'm hoping to just keep them going in a big fishtank (moved it to the basement last spring) under a set of shop lights... we'll see if they bloom or just stay green. Wouldn't it be fun to have WL blooms to cut and put in a bowl upstairs in the middle of January? LOL

Not like we can complain about cooler temps at the end of October... !

Thank you for the reminder, Gita. Both Brugs are pretty young plants. Although they are big, the branches are still very green. There isn't a lot of hardwood that can be used for cuttings. I can get no more than two out of each plant.
