I just ordered my first begonia. I've never tried them before. What kind of soil should I pot them in? More of a cactus soil, or a regular potting soil? Can't wait, they should be here next Thursday Smiling

I ordered 3 Cissus Discolor "Rex Begonia Vine" There was only one fireworks, and I thought it was a bit pricey. So think I'll wait for a better price on it, and since this one was much cheaper, see if I can even grow it first, before I try any other Begonia's :)

Yep, keeping my fingers crossed. Everything i read said it needs high humidity too, except this one post I came across on gardenweb. Not sure where this person lives, but sounds close to my climate:

I grow this plant, I'm in zone 10 or perhaps 9 this year, it is on the north side of my lath house and has a proper 2 ply roof over it. It get indirect light all day, and goes dormant in the winter. So I don't water it at all then. It is a beautiful vine. The sides of this area is not covered it's wide open, I have very dry humidity as low as 5% seldom over 50% and it get water once a week. I do not mist it, I treat it like a cactus, some of my Cissus are going nuts, growing all over every thing. I don't know if they will form a caudex from a cutting, please give me this information I sure would like to know. Thanks, Norma

That's right Carol. I read that on one of the websites when I was researching it. Grapes do really well here....so, just maybe? If it doesn't grow in your sun, it definitely won't grow in ours at 115 degrees! :)

I had to stop by here quick this morning because I LOVE Begonias! Lovey dubby I've had a number of them in the past but they don't do well in the low humidity of our house over the winter so I've also lost a lot over the years. I don't give up though, every year I find a few beauties I can't resist and add them to the collection. I've got quite a few photos from the past I'll dig up to share and try to take a few of the new ones I've got on the decks now.

Christine - 'Fireworks' has always been one of my favorites but alas, also one of those I lost a few years back. Sad

Carol - your B. luxurians is to die for! Another one I wasn't able to keep alive for more than a year. Grumbling I'm not familiar with B. felicifolia although it may have been one of the ones I admired at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens on one of our visits.

Carey - I had never seen 'Gryphon' before but found HUGE pots at Home Depot earlier this summer. Such a deal, only $7.00 - who could resist? Hilarious! It's one of those on our front deck and it's doubled in size since I bought it! Thumbs up

Alan - Cissus discolor is a beauty! I had a gorgeous one about five years ago but lost it the following year. They're hard to find but DH surprised me with one he found in Michigan this summer and it's absolutely beautiful. Lovey dubby I'm really hoping I can keep it alive for more than one year. Here's a pic I could find quickly of the one I used to have.

Debbie that is incredible. I can't wait to get mine to try. Should arrive Monday or Tuesday. Possibly today, but kind of doubt it. I haven't checked USPS yet to see where it is at today :)

Can't wait to see more of your pictures Debbie!

Carey, I got mine on ebay for a great price! They are being shipped from Florida. Or course you may be able to find them cheaper there in Texas. I've never seen them anywhere here in AZ, not even the nurseries.

Debbie I LOVE the gryphon. It is so happy on my front porch with the dappled morning sun, even though it's 100+ daily with no humidity!

Christine, I'm thinking it might be the one my sister bought at Longwood Gardens in July, but then it may have been one of the escargot variations...either way, similar leaves and oh so pretty. Lovey dubby I wish I had a little more shade so they could be manageable in the backyard as well, but it's just to blazing hot there in the afternoon. Sad

My Rex Begonia. Not sure what variety, but love the foliage.

It was a darker color when I bought it, I think it is getting a little too much light right now, but seems really happy where it is.....
