I finally opened up all the winter sewn jugs today. I had about 40 jugs with no signs of life. I will keep watering them for a couple months longer, then recycle the dirt. In all I think I planted about 130 to 140 jugs. This being my first year doing the winter sewing method I don't know if that was a good success rate or not. Some of the jugs only had like 2 or 3 seeds that sprouted & grew. I have planted most but not all of what came up. Some are still to small and would just get lost in the dirt. Others
That will not survive my wimter here will be left in pots and over wintered in my green house which better be repaired by this fall (or heads will roll) Sad still others like rose of sharron and other trees & shrubs have to get alot bigger before going to their forever home somewhere in my yard.
DnD, the different daylilies seeds I got in your Nov seed swap did fairly well and am prepairing their new bed. It will be exciting to see what they produce as most of them are hybrid crosses. So far out of what I grew from seeds only some of the poppies have bloomed. What have the rest of my fellow gardeners been growing? I tip my hat to you.
Happy Gardening :-)

Colleen, don't give up so fast on those jugs! Some may take two years to sprout! Depending on your weather over winter there may not have been enough warm/cold cycles to stimulate the seeds to grow.

This past December I was tossing jugs from the year before (all unlabeled) & found one with 9 seedlings! Only 1 had sprouted "on time" so I thought the seeds were bad. Not so! Ended up with 100% germination but it took time. Smiling

Uh-oh, Colleen! Blinking Hehehe

When they bloom, email me pictures. There's a chance I might be able to help you figure out which cross particular daylilies were from. Did you, by chance, happen to keep seedlings from the same crosses together? That would make it even easier and more accurate; but if not, I can still try to give you educated guesses based on the blooms. ;)

Thank You! DND. I did plant each pot together somewhat. Plus I still have the tags to let you know what I planted. It would give you a place to start right *Blush*

Here's another wintersewn seedling that's blooming. There is a tag by it that says viola. Is that what this is? I have never grown them before Blinking

Yes, it is a viola (or a pansy if the flower is pretty large). Very pretty! Most of my pansies haven't even started to bloom yet and it's June! This has been one weird Spring!

Colleen, just to reiterate Elena's confirmation, it is definitely a viola--or possibly a pansy, as she said. It's a pretty one! I like the red color.

I have violas here, too, but they are the Johnny Jump-Up variety and have been blooming for over a month. They were the first thing blooming this year, by far. (Before my dutch hyacinths, tulips, and forsythia.) My Johnny Jump-Ups had some competition this year....I planted a bunch of irises in that bed and both the irises and the Johnny-Jump-Ups are doing REALLY well...the JJU's are so TALL!...and they seem to be helping the irises out by soaking up any excess water and some of the nutrients. I lost half of the irises in my other bed, but none of the irises in the bed where the JJU's were planted. (There are other variables that might have impacted the irises success rate, but I believe the JJU's were a major contributor.)

Agoo,

That looks like the Arkwright Ruby viola. I'm growing them this year too. I tend to like the claret viola better though. Mine looks just like yours.
