Please explain, Jim? Do you see papilio as the genus?
And - don't sweat it! Smiling

No, not at all. I see it as a species. I see Oncidium as the genus, just like I see Cattleya or Dendrobium. I thought Phychopsis was a synonym for Oncidium papilio, thus making it a species. If Phychopsis is a synonym for Oncidium, that makes it a genus. Where am I off?

Both are the Genus, but Psychopsis is now the recognized name, with Oncidium being the not officially recognized name, but it being the synonym. (Papilio is simply the species.)

OK, so Psychopsis is a genus. I didn't know that. How many species does it include? I'm about to give up on these names. They change faster than I can learn them and I must not even have the correct framework in my head. They should have a graduate course on Orchid names. I think you summed it up well when you concluded "Yikes!"

40 years ago? If it is more than 40 days ago you're out of luck. Look up Schomburgkia. I have three of them and lo, they don't exist any more. The entire genus has been doled off to wherever. I have 30 or so Brassavolas that have morphed into something else that I can't pronounce. It is really crazy.

Along within this subject -
I remember a few years ago posting my Tuberolabium quisumbingii on a different forum. It was pointed out to me that the proper name for that one was now:
Parapteroceras quisumbingii ( accepted by Kew) I actually thought it was funny, the name reminded me of a Dinosaur.
Perhaps one day all this will be sorted out and the Orchids will be properly classified genetically. (Not like re-naming Iwanagaara to Jackfowlieara.... Rolling my eyes. )

Well, Oncidium still has it beat with about 335 species. I do wish this name game would settle down and let us all catch our breath. The orchid labeling companies must be making a fortune.

Bree, I don't think I have ever come across a spotless Onc Sharry Baby anywhere, although good culture helps to keep the spotting down a bit.

I'm almost afraid to post for fear the site has gotten brittle and will shatter. Well, here goes. This is a NOID Cattleya that falls in the seriously floofy catagory. I've had it for years and it always blooms at this time of year.

And Jim, I do understand - I am posting as always and I will continue to do so. But, I can't always find the proper time to take pictures; it is tough to keep it going, isn't it?

That's really pretty, Jim!
Sorry I can't help you out, but nothing new blooming here except a couple of Cyms. Between the weather and the fumigation, I've been too busy to think about pictures.
