And I hope they do well for you! :-)
I find that not all of my Cattleyas do that. And it really depends on how you hang them up. Putting some of them into a wooden basket (as you would Vandas) seems to be a good invitation to walk out of the basket and for many of them to grow long roots.

Ursula, you are scaring me with those Cattleya root photos..is this what I can look forward to
as my 150++ collection matures? I will have to start budgeting for that greenhouse extension
right away!

Lindsey, in the meanwhile I have chopped some of them down/ split them and potted them up in a more manageable fashion. Actually I am seriously looking into chopping the Copper Queen! Perhaps tomorrow.
But, in my hands many times the roots are much healthier when grown in more open fashion, rather than buried in decaying bark.

Very impressive, Ursula. I had no idea Catts would put on such roots. I also think orchids in general do better mounted than stuffed into a pot. I find myself eying just about everything as potential mount material. Road construction sites are prime.

Ohhh, me too!! And the little speckle-meister is very cute!

Lindsey, I would think your gorgeous Psychopsis must be this one - Psychopsis Kalihi? Oncidium would be the synonym.

Here is a fifth spike on my Not Irene Finney or is it Blc Memoria Crispin Rosales??? ( Thanks Roger West via Kathy) It seems a bit dark to be that one but how about Blc Memoria Crispin Rosales x Lc Irene Finney? Btw normally the spikes are closely timed to bloom pretty much all together, but the plant was re-potted (" re-basketed") in the Spring and is a bit mixed up.

Great show Jim and Ursula! Cym Leodogran 'Cradlemont' from Laurel is starting to spike for the first time here! Love that yellow Den! Could be Blc Memoria Crispin Rosales x Lc Irene Finney. He said it could also be a hybrid of MCR.

Oh Ursula, your Dendrobium Gillieston Gold 'Natalie' is YUMMY!
and an excellent example of why I shouldn't rush to cut off 'dead' looking plant parts!
About the Psychopsis..I always put what the grower has on the tag when I'm identifying photos..
are you saying that the Onc. part is not needed in this case? Psychopsis = Onc.? Is this another
plant that used to be called one thing and is now another? and should I rewrite the tag so as not
to make this mistake again? Confused Blinking

Yes, I would rewrite the tag. It is Psychopsis with Onc. given as synonym. Not both. And I could not find Kailihii, I would think it has to be Kahili. Take a look at my link, I would think it makes sense, right?

I always thought that Oncidium was a genus of orchids, on a par with Cattleya or Dendrobium. There are over 300 species of Oncidiums, one of which is Oncidium papilio. It is this Oncidium species (papilio) that is synonymous with psychopsis. Am I wrong?

Jim,
If I type Oncidium papilio into Kew's World Check list of accepted names, ( Oncidium the genus, papilio the species - [Papilio is NOT the genus, Psychopsis is.] )
http://apps.kew.org/wcsp/qsear...
Oncidium is not an accepted name, it is not listed in bold.
But if one types in Psychopsis papilio one gets Psychopsis papilio as the accepted name, papilio is the species.
You need to do it yourself here, it won't let me post the two different entries. I tried....
http://apps.kew.org/wcsp/prepa...

Orchidspecies.com lists Psychopsis papilio with Oncidium papilio as synonym.

Lindsey's hybrid is Psychopsis krameriana x Psychopsis papilio
