Someone gave me a bunch of tiny daff bulbs and if the critters haven't gotten them, I should have some blooming this year.

I walked my back yard yesterday and found 7 clumps of daffs already up! Did I mention we've had uncharacteristically warm weather this winter? Glare

I'm not familiar with Mary's Garden Patch. Sounds like they are on the ball though. Thumbs up

Susan the Rip van Winkle are nice I had them bloom for the fist time last spring. I 'm hopping they come back this year. I have planted a few of the miniature ones before but seem to get only 1 or 2 seasons out of them.I got them at Lowes so they might not be the best bulbs.

Don't bet on it, Bob. I've seen daffodils coming up already in Cincinnati. That was a couple of weeks ago. I has been a warm winter, though now we're covered in ice.

Usually when things bud this soon they will freeze and it messes up the plants. Grumbling

Most daffodils are pretty hardy and will tolerate a certain amount of frost and freezing.
There are a few exceptions to the rule, however, such as the Paper White Narcissus.
If your buds are already showing any color, you might want to pick them and bring them into the house
where they will open up. Daffodils should always be snapped off, never cut or snipped!
If you expect snow with the freeze, you have much less to worry about because the snow will act as an insulator.
Adding a mulch of dry leaves can be helpful if the temperature is going to drop much below 20 degrees
or the freeze is expected to continue for an extended period of time.
My daffodils have been up and in bloom for 10 days now, and we've had freezing night temperatures for 5 of the 10 days with no ill affects.
If you have a variety of Daffodil that you know is frost tender,
you can create a little tent for them using stakes and sheet plastic during the freeze.
Keep in mind that if the sun shines and it warms up, you will have created a sealed oven.
Be sure to remove or open the plastic tent when the temperature rises.

SongofJoy Yes, you are right. I remember last year, after they were up they took the freezing temps and lasted a whole month. They actually did better and lasted longer in the freezing temps. It seems to preserve them. I have never had any come up in January. I am a tad worried. Crying

BOB I checked the data base and not many people having problems. However I did notice there were conflicting information about how deep to plant them. One nursery said 1-5 times their size, what does that mean? Are we actually going to plant them 2 inches deep? No, just plant the same as all the others. Maybe that is the problem, because they are small, people think you don't have to plant as deep. But what about crocus they are small and still have to be planted 6 inches deep. Also they do not like to be crowded, plant 3-6 inches apart. Darn, there goes my idea for planting them in a pot. Crying

Our temps are predicted to be milder into February, but then, Feb is usually our coldest month here. I'm hoping for the best. Blinking

Maybe the temps are the problem for me there are many days and nights when temps are in the teens. Even with this being a warmer winter we have had a few days as low as 4 degrees. I do not cut mine at all the Hosta leaves cover them over. I put in I would say a dozen different kinds and most are gone by the 3rd year.

Wow, I don't understand that. Confused They are supposed to be hardy to zone 3! How about bulb booster, are they getting any sun? I have no leaves on the birch trees in the early spring and they get sun and are on the south side of the house, that's the warmest side. I don't mulch but usually end up with 4 or 5 inches of leaves in the bed and maybe that keeps them warm. I plant them between the hostas also and never cut or even snap them off. They just stay there till the sap runs back down into the bulb and when they are completely yellow I cut them off just above the ground. Bob, see if this will help you trouble shoot: Thumbs up
