Lots of metal went up today.

Thumb of 2012-02-03/dave/f6b2bc

Also, the plywood is up on the loft walls as well as several walls inside. It's starting to look like finished rooms with the electrical outlets cut out of the walls. Sorry that I didn't take any interior photos, but it was nearly dark when we finished today.

There are storms forecasted for tomorrow and over the weekend, so I'm really glad that we have a metal roof up. I'd love to see more of the walls up before the storms come, so we'll see how the morning goes!

That was the idea, Sharon. We really weren't wanting the barn to be the focal point, but that's sort of hard when it is so big!

The green is much more evergreen in person, BTW. I think it looks a little teal-ish on the computer.

Looks teal-ish too because there is no sunlight to provide contrasts in the photo. And Margret's right, it will blend right in when more trees are green; I'm still loving the Three Sisters nearby.

Have thoroughly enjoyed the thread & construction & photos. Love, love, love the colors. Green is my favorite color too. Loo-king guuuud mon!

I'm still back thinking about those first photos & that fabulous auger! I'm drooling. What a tool! You can get some work done mighty fast with that thing. I think I've already thought of about a hundred projects that would come in mighty handy for. Don't you just love nifty tools?

I noticed you used OSB for the roof decking. I mention it because I would like to hear your thoughts on that choice vs plywood decking. I know you do a lot of research & put a lot of thought into it so your reasons for your decision hold weight with me. I'm still struggling on the decision myself. Sort of a matter of old habits or perhaps I should say prejudices die hard. I think I'm still stuck in direct coastal hurricane frame of mind. Of course a barn & a house are two different creatures. If a roof gets compromised in a home you have drywall, insulation & all other kinds of considerations re: damage & you sure don't want to have to replace the roof decking because it's separating, bubbling etc... OSB roof decking is used up here all the time but I can't seem to get over that last hump mentally to accept it. I'm hoping you can help me with perspective. I'm not so concerned with using OSB for the walls of our house; it's just the roof that concerns me.

The metal on the roof is not 5V crimp but doesn't quite look like typical standing seam either. What is it?

I know we can't really see the big picture as if one is standing at your place but do you worry about water running down that slope & intruding into the barn? There must be something we can't see in the photos which diverts the water away from the barn.

You've made fast, fine progress despite the glitch with the windows. Looks like you have a good crew. The barn is quite pretty. I wouldn't mind turning it into a home! Big Grin It's going to be a thing of beauty to look at when you're in the house.

Good job! Thumbs up I tip my hat to you.

Ann,

OSB has largely replaced plywood in home construction. It has the strength of plywood and is vastly cheaper. It's what every builder around here uses for decking both walls and roofs and I never considered doing anything different.

The metal on the roof (and walls) is a pattern called "Tuff-Rib". You can Google it but here's a page of information about it: http://www.bestbuymetals.com/t... It is a very pretty pattern and I'm glad we chose it. The shape of the ribs gives me confidence in its water-tightenness.

That was a huge concern and consideration when we were choosing the site and doing the dirt work.

First, the barn isn't at the bottom of the hill, it's actually near the top. It's hard to see that from the photos, but there isn't a whole lot of land above the barn.

Second, the water coming off that hill, isn't much, actually, and will be even less when my swale project is done.

But third, before you get to the barn there is a low area and then it starts climbing back up until you get to the barn. That low area was cut using a transit and level and has a slope away from the barn. So water that does come to the barn actually gets stopped and drained away before it arrives. I'll try to get pictures of this area so you can see what I'm talking about. Thumbs up

Thanks for all the great info. I like that type of metal roofing too. I tip my hat to you.

I knew there was something not showing up in the photos as to the water run off situation but just couldn't see it.

Gosh, you're so close to being finished. It will be so nice to have it done. Big Grin Hurray!

We have that style of metal on our barn and our house's roof. It has been entirely satisfactory.

First, a bonus photo of the supervisor loafing and watching the action:

More metal on this morning. We're almost done with this south wall.

Thumb of 2012-02-03/dave/e5c9dc

Putting this metal up is quite challenging. Some of those pieces are 17 foot long length of metal, and we don't want to do this in vertical sections, so that means one long piece from top to bottom, with areas cut out for the window, door and roof sections. Then the pieces have to be slid into behind the trim, so this is sometimes a long and difficult process to fit just one piece.

These pieces come down and almost rest on a piece of flashing that is then sloped down so the water can shed off. This will guarantee that the metal sheets don't touch the ground or the concrete, and no water can ever infiltrate through the bottom.

One interior wall is done:

The wall upstairs is done:

Now, here's a picture of where the slope comes down toward the barn:

Thumb of 2012-02-03/dave/1e5ddf Thumb of 2012-02-03/dave/dd2b6c

The above are the same photos but on the right one I added blue arrows to show you how the water goes. It's an extremely gentle slope down, but a slope it is and we have had some major storms since this dirt work and I was happy to see the water had no problems moving through. It's a nice gentle slope down from the barn into this channel, and then a slope back up as you leave the barn area.

Here's another picture, this time on the other side looking up. You can see how the dirt slopes down from the barn into a channel, and then slopes back up to continue the hill on the right.

Looks to have been very well planned.
I think you've covered every potential problem, Dave. And it is beautiful.
I can't wait to see it when the trees are green, especially those three in the northern corner.
