In early September, DH told me that he noticed a deer coming to our Squirrel Buster sunflower feeder and getting the the seeds out by its tongue.

On Sept. 6 (late morning), we both saw it happening and he took a few pics through the patio door.

Yes, they DO love the seeds! One of the reasons I started my wildlife feeding areas outside my fenced yard was because the deer couldn't get to the bird feeder anymore once we extended one side of our fence. So the birdseed-loving deer could eat both birdseed and deer feed out there. The doe that's been coming the most during the summer didn't know she's supposed to eat deer feed. She preferred what I put out for the birds! She and the fawn don't seem to be around much anymore. Moved on to wherever the deer like to go in the fall, I guess, but occasionally I'll still see her.
I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. E. B.White

I just looked outside at the feeder and looks like she has been here earlier, The feeder was full last night and it is three quarters gone already.

Hey. learn something new every day as I didn't know deer like bird seed. I do know that they like a horse feed with molasses called sweet feed. That is what we used to feed the deer when I was in my 20s and had a cabin in the woods in upstate NY. Deer were not as numerous then as they are now!

I will very often see bunnies getting the seed under my feeders. Wish I had deer in the yard, but I'm sure the neighbors scare them off with all their "toys". Haven't seed a gopher tortoise on their front property in ages...there used to be at least 4 active burrows there Angry

This is a mama bunny that usually is in front yard, I took some pics of her in late June this year. She saw me, heard the little noise my camera makes when taking pics and started hopping away, then stopped. She has a larger white cottontail area, so I knew it was her.

Can you tell us the size of it Glen? And how large do they get?
They eat veggies too right?

Ann, it is a first year animal. I cannot tell the sex yet. It is about 10".
Attached is a big male (you can just see he has the black throat) that was sunning itself next door. He was about 21". They bask by raising their heads perpendicular to the ground facing the sun. But if you try to approach to photograph them they pull their heads flat: too close and they are off. The 'spikes' are the frill of the beard. (This is Pogona barbata).
They eat insects and vegetable matter. They love hibiscus flowers if you throw them to them.

Interesting creatures. thanks for the info. In south Fl. there are tons of the green ones, similar but w/o beards, that have either escaped or ppl have let them go & they are taking over, making pests of themselves & affecting the native creatures. A few years back we had abnormal freezes down there & 1 day while walking the dog, I saw about a 3 footer hanging head down from a thick tree limb. It had succumbed from the cold. My hubs & I saw another live one, quite large in the state park. We almost ran over 1 in the car. They're everywhere!!! And they are in the Everglades along with pythons & boas. Tsk, tsk, tsk

Ann I nearly missed him. He was moving keeping the stump between him and me. I had to keep circling to be able to photograph enough of him.
