Aha! You do grow a vandacious orchid in a pot! I so envy you folks that have vandas etc. Our humidity is normally low here, and I have seen a few offered as potted plants, but the only solution that has made sense to me is the ones grown in vases. Is your humidity normally above the 50% minimum in your growing area? I keep wondering if the roots are kept moist, maybe I could get one to bloom, or if they require the leaves to get the moisture too. Confused

Thanks.
Carol, I bought this Darwinara x potted like that. It seems happy so I left it alone. Silva Orchids grows them this way. After a while the roots attach to the pot anyway or grow all over the place.
I have no idea what the humidity in the greenhouse is. Remember I am able to grow Cacti & Succulents in the greenhouse too, so I don't think the humidity stays up for too long after watering.
I grow these little vandaceous Orchids very sunny, warm and flood ( water with a sprayer) the whole plant daily, since they dry up fairly quickly!
You could just try one, they don't take up much room. Smiling

We probably have more humidity here in the swampy east coast but I want them dry at night or their little root tips get destroyed if it's cool. I flood them daily in the morning so they will be dry by night. I have one vanda x in a pot too. The roots have already attached to the pot.
Boy I miss my red ones. My Lc. Loog Tone 'African Beauty' is lumping along but doesn't look good. That's my fav red. If I lose it I'll get another. I just love those waxy reds!!!!
Is the Renanetia smaller than a Renanthera? Love that! I like the yellow with red spotted rens too.
I am so happy to see your Darwinara and Neostylis Lou Sneary as a sneak preview!!!!! I am so proud to get these little vandas to bloom this year!

Well, my Lc. Loog Tone 'African Beauty' went last year belly up. But, since the blooms on that one are so short lived, I was not crying too much.
The Renanetia is a small plant, about the size of a Darwinara. I bought it here:
http://www.clanorchids.com/sto...
A word of caution - at the vendor the plant was allowed to grow crooked, there is a 90 degree angle between main plant and keiki - and the leaves were salt encrusted ( the older leaves still are). I had bought an Aerides houlletiana along with this one and they were packed really badly, the roots on the Aerides had broken off in transit.
Having said that, the Renanetia arrived in spike, it is growing out clean and proves to be an easy bloomer. I suppose, if I really wanted a plant which I only could get from them, I would take a chance.

Beautiful show of colors Ursula!

Cycnoches Jumbo Puff HC Sky just started blooming again for me. If I understand right, after it finishes blooming, I should stop watering and fertilizing it ?Thumb of 2010-10-11/stilldew/bd51ed

Happy belated birthday Lindsey!

Sorry I haven't been around much lately...been busy at work and my publisher for my newest book is breathing down my neck to reach deadlines! Add to that, I leave for South Africa in a couple of days...will be gone over 3 weeks so I guess I'll see you all next month.

Meanwhile, I figured I should post the few orchids I have photographed recently.

Lc. Crystelle Smith, Beallara Marfitch and Paphiopedilum gratrixianum

I have 5 other phrags in spike! I seem to have finally gotten over the non-blooming phrag phase.

At work, we have Brassia Eternal Wind and a NOID Vanda

Thumb of 2010-10-12/Todd_Boland/8be71c Thumb of 2010-10-12/Todd_Boland/b71157

Meanwhile back at home I also have Colmanara Wildcat 'Bobcat' and Paph. Little Alexander

The fall Odontoglossum alliance season is kicking in..I have a back load in spike...I should have plenty of blooms to great me when I return back home.
