I don't think your butterfly was after the pollen ~ I hadn't noticed the first time I looked, but I see that it has its proboscus down in the nectary. Cool!

Susan ~ I especially like your Lady Elaine.
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

If it were my garden I would remove it to the garbage (don't compost).

I thought about that pic real hard when Brian posted it. Since he mentioned cold damage, the areas affected would be congruent. I don't think I've seen any examples with color splotching only at the tips, so it makes me wonder. Notice also, how the outer three sepals seem more affected than the inner three petals. The outer ones would have been more exposed to cold than the inner.

Viral color splotching is usually strongly delineated, rather than blending with the natural color in a haze of changing color. Or, is it just that those parts are not in focus in the photo?

On the other hand, it's possible that it might have been the cold that brought out visible viral symptoms. At any rate, Brian, you need to keep a close watch on that one. If you're not sentimental about it, I'd toss it, too. But, I think we should wait and see what the younger buds that were not exposed to the cold look like when they bloom.

Love to see the blooms ladies. Ours are just budded but half as tall as last year. I have a Royal Sunset with a bloom of about2 inches. This years lilies will be a mystery.
The bloom is behind the caradonna. The lily is that orange spot sorta left top.

Loving them all Susan. Pink Latvia is a sweet one, like that bit of yellow accenting the whole pattern there.

I think Tinos can vary, I can see a bit of the red in your picture, so it certainly has potential. It's very unique, I would hang on to that one. Smiling

Thanks Lorn, but you really should thank Mags for her excellent taste in lilies, as she is the one that gave it to me. She was very particular in making sure it had it's red markings. Although, last year, they weren't as pronounced.... This year they sure are. Smiling

Diann, I appreciate Mags persistence in striving to have something as close to the original clone as possible!! You're very fortunate because they're not all like that anymore. Tinos is an old cultivar.

What a beautiful color!!

So how come the lower zones have their lilies blooming already? I have nothing yet, just buds everywhere. Sad
I checked my photos from last year and they are all from end of June into July. Are there early and later blooming varieties. I am pretty new to growing lilies. Green Grin!

We've had a mild winter and a very hot Spring. I think we've had 8 days in the 90's this month and tomorrow will be the first day with a high lower than 70. Everything is at least 3 weeks early.

Speaking very generally, lilies bloom in this order: martagons, asiatics, trumpets, then orientals.

There is plenty of overlap and varieties that are prone to bloom earlier or later within their span. Then there are the crosses between these divisions and your bloom usually happens somewhere in the middle.

Clear as mud? Green Grin!

This year is the weirdest for lily blooming chronology I've ever experienced. May blooms for the past 7 years went like this:
2006 - 9
2007 - 16
2008 - 1
2009 - 6
2010 - 14
2011 - 9
2012 - 46 and counting...
