Not too clear picture from the Philadelphia Flower Show.

Hi Mike,

Looks like you are on my side of the country also. Maybe you can join in on our plant swap that will happen here on the first Saturday after the Memorial Day Weekend.

Skiekitty,

No, I don't know what kind of roses are in the arrangement. I took so many pictures that year that I didn't get a chance to caption them all.

I joined the Daylily, Lily, Iris and Bulbs Cubits in this site and since I have had the rose crazies the longest and have about 230 roses, I figgured I would join up here too. Last year I had about two hundred but then went nuts about midsummmer and bought about 30 new small own root roses .

I bought from Vintage and Heirloom. I knew the bands wouldn't be very big as I had bought from Heirloom before. One reason being that I just love Clements roses.

It's quite humid here on Long Island in the summer so the roses do need spraying with a good fungide if you want nice green leaves that stay on the shrubs. Everything in my garden has too look decent even when not in bloom so I have to spray. Fortunately we are not bothered by Japanese Beetles here so a fungicide is all I need.

I don't have any old garden roses as I don't care for them but do love the old fashioned thick flower form so have lots of modern old fashioned look alikes. Plus I have all types of roses from high centered hybrid teas to singles to small flowered tiny roses. I like the floribundas and shrub types the best.

Besides the rose crazies my yard is heavily plannted with bee, butterfly and hummingbird attracting plants. Plus lots of fruiting shrubs that attract the backyard songbirds. Then there are the daylily, lily and iris flowers besides the roses.

I love my garden and spend as much time ouside as possible as soon as spring starts to green everything up.

Rita, you and your rose crazies certainly belong in this cubit. I also belong to the Daylily, Lily, Iris, and Bulbs cubits, so I have to wonder why you didn't mention joining the Clematis cubit. It's as fine a rose companion as the others and I can't conceive of growing roses without having clems climbing all over some of them.

My experience with Heirloom was a total fiasco, but I also love Clements roses. Fortunately, I was able to buy lots of them from Roses Unlimited, and especially from Roseland when it was still offering mail-order service.

I also prefer modern roses to OGR's, mainly because they take up less space. I have a few dozen OGR's and I occasionally take one out to make room for 4 or 5 modern roses. I also find that modern roses are healthier and more resistant to pests and diseases. The only things that get powdery mildew in my garden are a couple of old ramblers and a few of the teas and bourbons. All of the gallicas and rugosas are irresistible to rose curculio weevils. All in all, I'd rather grow modern roses.

I have afew Clematis but I don't have the Clematis crazies like I do with many of the other things I grow. I do like them when they are in bloom. I will check out more of the cubits here when I have the time. Only started up here afew days ago and still looking around.

I have bought from Roses Unlimited myself and do love their roses, great quality at a great price!

Like most folks I'm uncomfortable with writing an introduction, besides I just wrote one for the California forum
( http://cubits.org/Califliving/... ) I thought I was fairly witty there, so it's useless to try and be witty twice in one day regarding the same boring topic (me)

I grow roses
I grow them organically (trying not to come across as superior)
I blame drdon for the organic part, he was my organic muse.
Having grown roses in Shangri La (California) and where hell freezes over (Ohio) I know a little bit about them (Oh shoot- there goes that superior thing again)

Seriously, I'm nice and I love roses... so can I join the club?

Cheers
Dove

Hi - a lot of familiar names over here - so nice to see you all again! It's been a while.

To those of you I haven't met before, I'm Rannveig and I live in Iceland. I'd grow all the roses in the world (and lots of other plants as well) if I could, but climate, space and finance are a bit of a constraint .....

I'm the mother of two wonderful girls, about to be divorced and could possibly loose my garden in the process. It's a horrible thought and I'll do everything in my power to keep that from happening ...... but realistically I'd probably need to win the lottery to pull it off ..... I've been a stay-at-home mom for 9 years due to health reasons, but now I'm forced to try to find some means of an income greater than the disability benefits, so far with no luck ..... our economy is in the freezer, unemployment is high (by our standards) and our currency is in the dumpster so everything is horribly expensive right now. I was too depressed last fall to wrap up my roses for the winter (my husband/soon to be ex left me in October) so I'm a bit anxious to see how they've fared this winter. Fortunately it was a mild one, I'm hoping there won't be any disasterous late freezes yet to come ....

Anyway - that's about it - good to see you all again!

Rann

Ahhh, Rann, so sorry to hear about your difficulties and the stress of possibly leaving your home and beautiful garden!
I am glad you found your way over here to the Rose Cubit and hope you'll share some of your lovely photos and perhaps also contribute a few to our new database.
