Weeeell... thats amazing since not that long ago on DG I requested picture avatars and smilies and droves of people including Dave said they liked the clean and tidy look without all the "annoying" avatars and smilies. Rolling my eyes.

Luckily, you have Trish on your side, CR. She loves the smilies and avatars, so they're here to stay.

Roses_R_Red, how wonderful your property sounds! Please don't ever worry about "knowing enough." No one here is a rose snob and lots of people here have just started planting roses, so you probably know more already than many of us do. Some of us do have lots of experience with growing roses, fighting pests and diseases, and sifting through the mail-order nurseries to find the best, and we're all anxious and happy to share that experience.

Hi, Andi. Great to see you here. Do you make fabric quilts or do you just garden in quilt-like patterns?

Thanks for the welcome ladies.

Skiekitty, I love blue roses also. zuzu, I know how much you like to share your knowledge, and that's why I'm happy that I found all of you.

Evey, I just had a virtual walk thru your secret garden and all of the periphery of your home. The gardens and indoor/outdoor areas are beautiful.

Sorry. Somehow I thought that I had attached this picture. The color looks a little off here. I'll see if I can find another one.

Welcome Roses and Andi and any other new faces I haven't greeted yet. I'll pop in and out here, but since I'm still working full time at age 66, soon to be 67, time is limited indeed. Zu, I know you're in the same boat with me. We sure messed up somewhere back there, didn't we, to still be working when almost everybody else our age is retired? Well, my SEP IRA tanked after 911 and my investment "adviser" didn't do a thing until I called him and told him to stop the bleeding! That was my last foray into the stock market, which I'd done well in up to that point, but I'm not alone in losing my hide during those times. Ah, well.

Zu, CR, Sue, Melva, Evey, yep, I'd have to say we have a fine group here to lead us newbie rosarians farther down the garden path!

Hi Everyone,

It's nice to see some old friends here, and I'm looking forward to making new ones, too. Formerly known as Repeat_Bloomer, I was absent from the other site for a while, and am happy to be part of this new venture. For those I've know for a few years, there's no need for any introduction other than to say, "Nice to see you again!" For new acquaintances, you can expect to see me hanging out here quite a bit, especially once spring arrives and I have garden news and photos to share. First to arrive will be the spring bulbs, followed by the early roses in mid-May, then the first full flush of rose blooms in early June. Then will come the companion plants' blooms in mid summer, followed by the repeating varieties, so there should be a steady supply of discussion topics and photos.

In the meantime, I do a lot of wildlife photography now, and have started a cubit named Nature Photography. Some of my favorite subjects, besides plants, are the hawks that are native to the Hudson Valley, and the bald eagles that migrate down the Hudson River this time of year to stay ahead of the freeze line in the river's water (so that they can continue to fish from it). Many of them perch in trees right down the street from where I live, and it's always a treat to head down to the river bank, stand under a tree, and just look up into their regal faces. It's also fun to watch the adolescent eagles (who don't get their white head and tail feathers till the age of five) learn to land and take off from the floating ice in the river's waters. They perform a lot of crazy antics as they get their sea legs, or sea wings, or whatever it is they get.

I also spent last summer doing a photo documentary of the region's beautiful and unusual mushrooms and other fungus growing on the lush, moss-covered hillsides of the Atlantic Highland region along the river banks. I'll probably start a thread with those photos, too.

In the meantime, it's still much too cold here to do anything in the garden. We're getting a foot of snow today, and being a southerner, I always get very tired of northern winters by this time of year. But this weekend I'll be flying off to the California Bluegrass Association's "Winter Camp," where I'll spend some time learning and performing music with pros and other dedicated amateurs. The camp is being held in Petaluma and will run Monday through Thursday. Then, I have the pleasure of driving a few miles north to visit Zuzu on Friday. What a treat that will be!

Well, enough for now. Even though I'm working from home today due to the snow, I'm still suppose to be working, so I had better get a move on. But I'll check back in again later!

Mike - Oh my goodness that is a beautiful picture! That definitely rates a high WOW outta me! Smiling When I lived WAY upstate NY (on the Canadian Border east of Lake Ontario), my DH & I would go fishing at a teeny little town called Dexter or off a creek just outside of Dexter called Muskellunge Creek. It was there at Muskie Creek the first time I saw a bald eagle in the wild close up.. he flew right over me about 10 feet off the ground. WOOSH! Pretty amazing sight.

Evey I've tried a variety of vines including Clemetis and find them undependable.
I underplant a lot of my once bloomers with self sowing Morning Glories which fit in great with my no-fuss gardening style.

Vicky, perhaps you planted cultivars that weren't rated for your zone. Arlene (Pirl) gardens in a cold climate and her garden is full of gorgeous clematis blooms. But, if you've found a plant that suits you best, that's all that matters! I'm not meticulous on pruning and also prefer no-fuss, except my roses. Roses in the south pretty much require spraying just because of the issues that come along with humidity and heat. I steer toward perennials that keep on giving over and over... roses, clematis, daylilies and irises.
