Happened upon this from this site: http://besteats.wordpress.com/...

*note – do not eat just any old lily bulb that you find in your garden because there are several species of lilies used to make soap which are toxic. buy only the safe, packaged for food bulbs as in the photo above.

Not exactly a credible source and I've never heard of making soap with lily bulbs, but it should raise a "just in case" sort of heads-up.. Personally, I think the author is talking about some lily imposter as I mentioned in the first post in this thread, or is somehow extrapolating (erroneously) from the fact that lilies are toxic to cats.

How did you prepare them? Or just eat them raw?

This summer I will try different ways. I have tasted the buds before, some were good, some not so. Maybe we can have a competition, which lily tastes the best.

Lily cook-off! Hurray!

After an easy wash to remove potting soil, the scales were tossed into a pork stir-fry, with carrots, peas, pineapple, onion.... By no means the dominant ingredient - more of a little novelty - but they were sweet, starchy like Rick desribed, and kind of melted in the mouth.

The foliage of these particular babies had dried off early. They came from a batch of Mont Blanc seedlings that threw tiny, distorted, pollen-less flowers (none quite as charming as the old 'Corsage'). At least they get my vote for taste

Now how shall we test each other's recipes? Big Grin

The kind of melting in the mouth quality, at least compare to potatoes, was something I also noted.

Anthony, I would imagine your inland area climate would be very good for cherries, plums and maybe even peaches. I see in the background of one of Della's pictures there appears to be a couple cherry or plum trees. I suppose your temperatures in the spring can vary quite a bit from shoreline to just a few miles inland higher. Edit added: So when you were eatin' yourself silly on cherries, I was having a little cherry juice too. First time trying it; has more of a cherry wood flavor than I anticipated. Rick--no, it wasn't grilled, altho this one might be OK hot (like for colds). Pretty good stuff.

The great prophets are rarely understood... so they say >> Hilarious!

Hehehe... and I thought I made up Lachlan Lilies - I forgot all about Vogelry bulbs! I chose 'Lachlan' just as a Derwent Valley name with aliteration potential with 'lilies', to coordinate with the Styx River Cherries and all... Rolling on the floor laughing

Indeed, we can grow alot of stone fruit here. Cherries and apricots are significant around Hobart area. My yard boasts apricot, plum, nectarine and peach trees, but most years a mould gets more nectarines than we do. Same with the grapes Sad Still - apples and plums abound, and the apricots are just ripe now - had some for breakfast!

I wonder if lily bulbs might make an intersting inclusion to a crumble topping for stewed apricot, in place of flaked almonds perhaps? Hmmm....
