Jim, here is the NJ Orchid Society January newsletter listing email addresses and the Show winners. One could take it from there.

Dumb question, why not simply pick up a Cym tracyanum? Since this one looked a lot like it?

True! Your picture of Cym. tracyanum from a show in Europe is on the Plant Files at DG still. From the search, (I am cross-eyed this morning from searching!) there are hundreds of crosses with Sleeping Beauty as a parent, but very few have the amazing markings that one from the North Jersey show had. Looks like it's a very lusty parent! Not very many with tracyanum in the mix, though! Guess that's where the stripes are coming from. Whoever has it should be propagating that one, I think.

For now, I'll satisfy my Cymbidium lust with another of the more heat-tolerant ones from the Everglades series rather than go for one that 'might' look like Sleeping Beauty x tracyanum, and also might not bloom well here.

My nun's orchids have opened one flower, finally! This bodes well for flowers when I have company in a couple of weeks . . . that will be nice! Two other pots coming along - Phaius Microburst 'Wild Thing' and a big NoID that bloomed beautifully with big flowers last year. It was labeled as 'Wild Thing' but when it bloomed it obviously was not. C'est la vie, with orchids.

You beat me, Elaine. My Phaius orchids are still in the fat bud phase.

It is time to give up on that Cym and move on to other things. My bamboo orchids (Arundina graminifolia) are blooming:

Also, I discovered a blooming NOID Cym out by the oak tree.

Cym Leodogran 'Cradlemont' has been blooming its head off for months and today, I found yet another spike coming.

I had to look at DG to check that picture. Yes, the World Orchid Conference in Dijon. That was FUN. But I remember the lighting being fairly poor to get good pictures....

Phaius are such neat plants, I wish I had the room for one, but there is only so much one can cram into the place.
Good looking Noid Cym too, Jim!

Thanks, Ursula. Bree and I think it may have tracyanum in it. I didn't think about it until she brought it to my attention.

Good news, I get my 16 orchids on loan to the state fair back tomorrow. I wonder what they will look like?

All 16 of my display orchids are back smiling in the OC. I think they will all recover. It's good to have them back.

Love the colors on that Flying High, Jim.

I have a couple of new ones opening, couldn't resist a first picture even though the flowers aren't quite open all the way yet.
Cym. Kenny Wine has a sort of short spike, but lots of buds. Onc. Ester Oka 'Lake View' hasn't quite spread out her skirts yet.

Bee Yewtiful, Kathy! Nice going on the ribbons. Your pictures are fabulous.

Is that Den. Spectabile one of yours? It is magnificent. In a space alien sort of way . . .

I built a "light-box" or whatever the professional photography people call it. It has two translucent side panels and interchangeable back panels that are opaque (white or black). Each panel is 24" wide and 32" high, so it will handle a pretty large plant. The "floor" is flat black. I can either use it with natural (east exposure) light or use two miniature flood lights. I just took this pic of my 'Emerald Isle' using the light-box. I am using 9:30 AM, natural (east) light. I am still experimenting on what works best - lighting/aperature/exposure time/zoom.

This 'Emerald Isle' originally had three buds but while transporting the plant for a local garden club presentation, two of the buds broke off. I now know to bubble-wrap the buds/flowers to prevent this from happening again. This plant was a division taken from a "mother" plant in January, 2012. The mother plant had 34 blooms, and was in constant bloom from the end of August, 2011, until the end of December, 2011. These flowers are very fragrant. This particular flower is now three weeks old and still looks wonderful. I sell these particular divisions on my web site www.tropicalplantsandmore.com. Ken
