It's really magnifique, Jim. A truly quirky Valentine flower. Boy! are there ever a lot of orchids for sale today. Trader Joe's had a bunch of really interesting ones, Oncs and even a Miltonia, but it was so crowded I didn't stop to read the labels. Maybe I'll go back tomorrow.

Here's one a bit more traditional. Plus a couple more passion flowers that opened right on cue for today! Hope you'll excuse a non-orchid pic for the occasion.

Quadrangularis. Still hoping the right pollenator will find it. (although I did try playing Cupid with my little paintbrush on these two)

It's cold and rainy out there, feels like British Columbia on a summer day . . .

The weather was beautiful this morning but it is clouding up with a strong wind out of the north and temps are falling even in the afternoon. I just closed the OC windows At least I got some gardening work done before retreating to the comfort of the house around noon. I took Patty to the airport yesterday for a trip to Virginia to visit her sister and kids. I'm left here to my own devices. Green Grin!

I found Ada Keiliana X Odm. triumphans blooming today.

Also opening today is Psychopsis mariposa 'Green Valley'. The flower is very large on this variety.

I really like the Ada Keiliana X Odm. triumphans, Jim. It looks a bit like my Odbrs. mem Nikoline Lorentzen 'Marz Starz' that tried to bloom last summer before the raccoon broke off the spike. Green Valley is amazing. Wonder what the human rights advocates would say if they knew we were growing little people . . .. little alien people dressed for Carnavale.

We're getting a spritz of rain with this front passing now. It's also starting to really blow here - I'm worried I'll lose all the little mangoes that are already on my tree. DH went to Lk. Eustis for a sailing regatta but he just called to say they never got any races off before the weather came through. He says they'll sail tomorrow - Hah! It's going to be below freezing up there tomorrow morning.

I have all the frost covers ready to deploy, and all the 'chids gathered in the little greenhouse shelf units, with water jugs at the ready to fill with warm water before I go to bed. Phew! glad we haven't had to do this often this winter. Bloomers are coming indoors to grace the kitchen counter for the next few nights.

Jim, I love the Psychopsis. All by yourself? What to do first.... Whistling

Yes, Elaine! Keeping fingers crossed it is not so cold. I suppose in our climate up here there is some finality in the Fall?

Anyway - I am really happy to see tons of buds opening on this Denrobium nobile x, this is Den Love Memory 'Fizz', flowering again for me. I am so glad I stopped years ago putting these poor babies through dry and cool spells to get them to bloom. Lots of sun and watering within reason works just fine to get them to grow and bloom. I will post again when the first cane is fully open.

This one lost some of its new growths last Summer due to black rot. But, there are now a couple of late growths on that plant. So it survived.

Bee-yew-tees Ursula. That shot of the little Dendrochilum looks like it should be on a calendar of Japanese art. What a lovely plant.

I tried the cool, dry treatment on my Den. Judith Nakayama and I think I may have killed it. Time will tell . .. it looks very sad.

Here's my display of bloomers on the kitchen counter on this cold, windy night. It's not going down too low tonight, but the wind chill is pretty cold.

That tent looks serious!!

Btw I always bring a few of the smaller blooming Orchids into the living room. I like the way it looks. Smiling

Regarding the Dendrochilum tenellum - I would consider it an easy grower as long as it gets plenty of water. ( mine is in a tree fern ring) It doesn't want a super sunny spot, so that helps too. I really set back my Dendrochilum magnum a couple of Summers ago by keeping it too sunny by mistake -outside in the cage. It had lost all leaves that year. But it bounced back and I expect blooms again next Fall.

Thanks Kathy!

A real chilly blustery day here today, so I spent hours in the greenhouse! Cleaned out all the trays, washed some of the glass panels ( what I could reach), moved the two Lc Fire Dance 'Patricia' to the front ( they are breaking through the sheaths), moved other Catts into their spot. Moved Ang sesquipedale into its old spot. Found a couple of mild Boisduval scale infestations in their beginning stages, cleaned them up. ( beginning stages = white single dots on on leaves.) I wanted to fertilize too, but I will do that tomorrow, done now. All in all, a really nice productive day. Smiling

Sounds like the perfect way to spend a cold, winter day in NJ, Ursula. I found a couple of new spots of scale on my Lc. Trick or Treat and am trying the "cold will kill it" method to get rid of it. Letting the plant stay outside until bedtime, and then will tuck it away in the quarantine ward with my poor old Chia Lin. It's sitting right on the edge of the pool, so it won't freeze even if it does get that cold tonight.

Kathy, that little yellow fellow is Lc. Goldbrad. Indoor lighting washed out the color a bit, it is a nice, rich golden yellow with a burgundy throat.

It was windy all day, but has eased up now, so the temp is falling like a stone. The back yard is Tent City, and weatherman says we'll have 50's tomorrow night, and highs of 80 by Thursday.
