Very cool shot, Bree. I love it. That fly really posed for the picture!

I am getting a bit excited about my passi that I showed on Thursday - I tried to pollenate the two flowers with a little brush, and so far they have not dropped as the others did. Maybe I've succeeded?? Its common name is Giant Granadilla, and it's supposed to make yellow fruit the size of a football (or rugby ball in Oz?). We shall see!

Most of the buds on that first spike are now open, and I love the show! This is Dendrobium Love Memory 'Fizz'.

All lovely, but that Lyonara is a fabulous color! (I do love those reds)

What do you suppose became of Jim? Last we heard from him on Friday, he said he was all on his own. He could have got into all sorts of mischief! Maybe he went back to the fair to babysit his wayward orchids. No posts from him on the other forum either.

Thumb of 2013-02-19/bree/083af2 My flower looks similar but i think mine is Decaisneana (alata x quadrangularis). I think Giand Granadilla is just Quadrangularis isnt it?
Mine hasnt had any passionfruits on it but the vine is massive, plenty of flowers and we have plenty of bees and other passionfruits fruiting, someone told me i needed another of the same vine to pollinate it but who knows.

No, no, I'm here but have been suffering with a bit of stomach flu. I love to cook when Patty is away but I had no appetite. I began feeling better today and will pick her up at the airport around midnight tonight.

Ursula, you have been putting on quite a show. My 16 bloomers have still not been returned so I have anxiously been monitoring new spikes. Just today Degarmoara Flying High is beginning to open.

I just got a call from Patty. The flight is delayed and will now arrive at 1:15 AM tomorrow. I'm too old for this silliness. Last night's low was 39 degrees here. There is no damage that I can see.
I'll leave you with a picture of the landlord, who came to visit this afternoon. He likes to sit atop the fountain and make sure everyone is behaving properly.

Beautiful, Jim! Good that you are feeling better. And here we were thinking you were out partying and gambling at the Hard Rock or something. . . is that where your stomach flu came from? Rolling my eyes.

Your hawk is a beauty. We have a Cooper's hawk around here lately that hunts my songbirds. He's also really loud and screeches like a seagull as he's flying around claiming his territory. A few days ago he perched on the power pole at the corner of our house, watching my birdfeeders and screeching away. So, rather than shoot him with my camera, I took my little plastic pellet gun out to see if I could scare him off. (there's a metal transformer on the pole that makes a good noise if I can hit it) Well, it must have been the wind, because I ended up hitting the hawk right in the chest! All it did was ruffle his feathers a bit, but he did take off and fly away. He hasn't come back to the pole yet, either.

My yard is undamaged from last night's cold, too. Thank goodness and let's hope that's the last I'll see of these silly tents! Lugging the jugs of water out into the sun to warm up, then tucking them away in the tents and little greenhouse units was getting tiresome, too.

Jim, interesting stuff! The Gongora Smaug is really neat, looking forwards to see the open blooms. I see Hoosier made that cross.
I see both you and Laurel grow the Dendrobium keithii, I would love to see a whole picture of the plant/growth to put it into perspective. ( next time you take pictures...)
Gotta love the Landlord! Thumbs up Hope you are both fine and home.

Ursula, here is a photo of the Den keithii plant. The last time I met Laurel in Apopka, Charlie Chapman gave her a handful of cuttings and she later gave me two of them. I just can't sweet talk him the way she can. Shrug! . Anyway, we both seem to have bloomed it quickly. I just stuck my two pieces in a pot of bark and they seem to be doing fine.

Here is Maxillaria setigera. It is very fragrant.

That is a pretty plant, looks a bit like the Ric rac cactus. Ah, yes that looks more like the Jim I know!

I have Howeara Lava Burst 'Puanani' opening lots of flowers today. Much redder than they were last summer. There are 4 little plants in the dish, with a total of 9 spikes coming along. The spikes elongate and the flowers open in succession so they last a very long time, too.

That's great, Kathy. Very exciting.

Ursula, is it possible that the Cym. Sleeping Beauty 'Tracyanum' that you photographed at the North Jersey show, now be named Cym. Pharaoh 'Tracyanum'? Elaine and I have been trying to run it down and it has not been easy. It looks like it may have been hybridized in 1969 by Wonderbar and if so, there could be hundreds of seedlings, all different.

The Howeara is looking great, Elaine!

Jim, we did receive that time a correction from the President of the North Jersey Orchid Society, Richard Ho. He said the correct name is Cym. Sleeping Beauty x tracyanum.

An honor well deserved. Do we know who showed the Cymbidium. Perhaps they have one for sale or know where we can get one.
