How many Daff W.P. Milner do you plant around your tulips?

Will they take over the tulip bed?

How deep and how far apart do you plant them?

@Marilyn, I haven't planted the Winston Churchill (not WP Milner😜) yet, but I when use the daffs, I plant them in a circle around the bulbs I need to protect.

I typically plant them 5 inches apart, and 4-6 inches deep, if I can get that deep. I have this lovely GA red clay, that I have to amend.

I'm sorry, I thought you mentioned before that you planted the WP Milner daffs. *Blush*

Next year, I might plant them around my tulips. I have other taller daffs in and around some tulips, but that wasn't done intentionally. What daffs do you plant around your tulips?

I have this gosh awful KY clay that I have to admen all the time and that is very time consuming and frustrating. Grumbling Thumbs down

When I lived 40 years in OH, I never remembered the soil being so awful.

I was just looking at the tulips at Colorblends and realized that they must have gotten new shipments on some of their 'sold out' bulbs. Was I surprised! Blinking Thumbs up

They have 49 of the varieties and/or variety blends available at this moment! And that includes the coveted Parrot Blend! Lovey dubby Hurray!

Parrot Blend:

It is too late for me to be ordering from them now, but there are some that I would have liked to have gotten weeks ago, but were sold out at the time.

Just wanted to let y'all know about it!

I love that Parrot Blend they have. But planted nothing this fall. Am curious to see if any come Parots up next spring. Probably not.

@Marilyn, I agree, working with clay soil is such a pain. The WP Milner will be going in my new peony bed, along with T. Akebono. I will plant WPM strategically to protect the tulips, and around the lilies that I have planted in this bed.

I like to plant smaller daffs around my tulips. Last fall I planted N. Little Gem at the edge of my bed that had the Red Hot Tulip mix, and in 2012, I planted 250 N. Hawera in and around my beds with my lilies. I noticed not as much critter damage in those beds since I've done that.

I like N. Hawera, it has thin leaves that doesn't over power the plants I use it to protect, and it's also fragrant,

BTW, I love, love, love the Parrot tulips. I've planted them in the fall for several years now. I haven't noticed that previously planted ones have ever returned😔

@Cem9165

Do you like both WPM and Little Gem or one more than the other? I haven't grown either, but like them both. I'll have to get some of those to circle my tulips next year. Maybe it will keep the rabbits from chewing my tulips. Wish that I "known" about both of them earlier this Fall. Think I like the idea of planting mini daffs that bloom early. Thumbs up

BTW, where did you get Daff 'Popeye'?

Another little Daffodil that would be good for protecting other bulbs is Topolino. They're only about 8" tall and cute. I had meant to order the parrot blend too, and realized it after my order shipped. Don't think I'll be planting anything else this year, looks like the ground is going to freeze early, if it isn't already.

I've 12 bulbs of T. Dordogne that I dug up to plant fresh T. bulbs of a Darwin Hybrid mix. I'm still waiting for the ground to get warm enough to be able to dig and replant them.

@Marilyn, I love all 3 of the mini daffs.

Thanks! I tip my hat to you.

Love all those beauties, esp. those gorgeous parrots! Lovey dubby I need to get me some Parrot tulips at Colorblends next year! Thumbs up

Need to get some mini daffs next year.

According to B & B, this is what WPM looks like this

Marilyn, you are so right, that's not WP Milner, it's 'Minnow😳 I don't know how I got on the WP Milner daff kick LOL. 😳😳😳
I've edited my posts to reflect the correct daffs I have😁

Minnow came from Colorblends, I planted 200 of them on 1/5/14 around the lilies, and they still bloomed fine this past spring.

Minnow planted January 2014
http://www.colorblends.com/Who...

Hawera planted in fall 2011
http://www.colorblends.com/Who...

I will be planting N. Winston Churchill, not WPM in my new bed. I looked back at my notes on gardening, I've planted many bulbs in late December and early January in the past, and they've done fine.

I was inadvertently sent this daff when I ordered N. Gentle Giant from Bluestone Perennials in 2009. It has the most delightful scent. N. Sir Winston Churchill was the closest thing I could find that was similar in appearance, that is why I ordered SWC this year, as a new addition to my garden.

You will love SWC! Lovey dubby It is beautiful and smells wonderful! I've been growing it in my garden for many years. I love it and this one: Daff Geranium is the single version of SWC and I've been growing that one for many years too. Very fragrant! Lovey dubby

I think I've grown Minnow before.

Glad I could help you id daffs. Thumbs up

Do you grow WPM, btw?

knock wood, but the voles seem to mostly leave my "species" crocus alone (they did devour 993 giant crocus bulbs one winter, though)... some get nipped by bunnies, but my solution is just to plant lots of them.

Frozen ground here, but I'm counting on it thawing a couple of times so I can finish planting LOL. If not, I'll be potting up a LOT of bulbs in Jan, or maybe putting black plastic down on the veggie garden so the soil thaws enough that I can trench them in there.

It's fun to see what everybody has planted!
