Right, it is expected to be WARM here! Fortunately my pipe was just to distant water trough. We have never had a pipe in the house freeze. What a mess that must be!

Oh yes, it is! We have a little place on Lake LBJ. 'Had it for 30 yrs ( it was built in the '50s). A couple of years ago, the PVC pipes froze, water heater too. We didn't know it at the time. We went up in the spring and turned on the water at the street. Water was spewing out of the linen closet and walls. The pipes ran under the house, along the middle of the house. The plumber replaced everything with some kind of pipe that expands. We haven't had a problem since, but also didn't have a really cold winter last year. It's always a surprise when we go back there in spring!
Another coooooold one tonight compliments of the Polar Vortex. 29º for the lower half of the state. You in the north, hunker down and light the smug pots!! AND THEN Thursday night the Houston area is predicting sleet and freezing precipitation. This is giving those of us with Tropical gardens a heart attack!!

It will be 28 tonight and 72 Saturday! We're trying to decide whether to cancel a mtg. this evening because of predicted icy roads. I'm sure that sounds funny to people who live where the winter weather is much harsher, but we're not used to driving on ice on the hills here. Wimps, I know!
It looks like Houston and San Antonio will be hit about the same time as we are. I'm heading out to cover a peach tree that has already budded. Crazy weather!
Nothing wimpy about not wanting to drive on possibly very icy roads without the proper equipment and not having enough experience with such driving. I wouldn't even be able to even drive down my driveway if there were much ice on it. Too steep, downhill. I could end up skidding to the other side of the road and hitting trees and bushes on the other side. When we had a really bad ice storm years ago, those who didn't get out early on had to stay for quite a few days. Quite a few people tried to get out and didn't make it. Not me! We bunkered down until the thaw came.

A few days ago I was in a short-sleeve shirt. This morning it got down to 20 F and tomorrow morning it is predicted to get down to 12 F. No ice/snow though (as far as I know), so it could be worse. Of the next ten days we are predicted to be in the 20's for five of those days and lower teens for two days. Bring on Global Warming!

People always think Austin is flat. This is what our backyard is made of. And this is why I garden mostly in large pots!
I made a grocery store run a bit ago. We've canceled our mtg. I've covered my peach tree. We have Homeland, Season 2 to watch. Fireplace is ready to light. I think we're set.
Our street could be used as a ski run. It's fairly steep. I'm not driving down the hill on ice!
Sandi, do you live near Lake Austin? About 20 years ago, when my Miss. State U. team went out to play Texas, we had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant overlooking the lake. I don't remember the name of the restaurant but remember that the area was really nice hill country with a good view.

The County Line is high on a hill, serves barbecue. There's another restaurant on Lake Travis, The Oasis, that overlooks Lake Travis. It has spectacular views, but not known for it's cuisine! After 20 years, some have come and gone, unfortunately. The County Line is near us. And yes, we are near Lake Austin too.
There is a restaurant in either Austin or San Antonio (my mother can never remember which - or the name of the restaurant, which is NOT helpful! ) that was partially made of the reclaimed wood from my great uncle's barn. One of these days I'm going to find out the name of the restaurant - and where it actually is! - and visit the restaurant. Hopefully before it changes hands and the new owner decides to tear it down and build something else.
It's sleeting now. I took some trash out to the bin and the lid was frozen shut already. I think it's pretty cool to have the freezing weather, but only for one day, thank you!
I was just venting, not expecting anyone to know. It's getting steadily colder here, but I don't think the rain has turned into anything yuckier yet. It is expected to. Blech. I'm glad "winter" down here only lasts for 2 days at a time before the next warm spell comes back.
We've had a few accidents already. They spray some kind of liquid on the overpasses and bridges to keep them from freezing. Unfortunately, it is slippery and cars aren't expecting it. I'm glad I'm home already!
