Seeds would be great, Greg. We might frost tomorrow night, but just barely so I think I still have time to get seeds in. It's getting up into the 60's and 70's during the day. I'll cover my semps just to give them a little extra edge. These are all amazing plants -- the seeds are worth a try! MR

I am in Denver and it gets pretty cold here but it is a dry windy cold.

If Greg does not have any seed you might try Sunscapes rare plant nursery in Pueblo CO. He offers plants but you could contact him to ask about seeds. He has a relationship with the Rocky Mtn Plant Society and Denver Botanical Gardens. Given they are in the foothills of the Mtns he might be able to tell you more. This is what his catalog says.

BUKINICZIA cabulica - (Plumbaginaceae) Blue-green rosettes with unusual mottled leaves. Outstanding foliage plant with pink flowers the second year. Reseeds nicely. Pakistan 1"(6") x 6" Sun, Biennial

here is the one out of four that survived my crazy summer .. I think I will repot into one of the tiny tufa pots from Chris. The plant was purchased at a local nursery and was one of the bunch, which I kept for myself and the others I sent to Oregon and Washington in June?.

Thanks not too bad for end of summer and the painters wars. (everything out there was under siege while they repainted the exterior of the townhouse. I think it looks like me ... a bit tired, but hanging in there. Hilarious!

Found one of Lynn's old posts about this plant.

valleylynn said:Zuzu, thank you for the information. On further study it shows that:

According to this site Bukiniczia cabulica is the accepted name, and the other two names are synonyms. http://www.cgf.net/plantdetail...
http://navigate.botanicgardens...
Interesting information on this site http://translate.google.com/tr... Disregard some of the text, but it does explain why it is sometimes listed as a perennial.

Aeoniopsis cabulica is an unresolved name (The Plant List http://www.theplantlist.org/tp... )
All the photos I find using Google Search show the same plant we are talking about in this thread. One blog site makes this statement: "Bukiniczia cabulica (formerly Aeoniopsis cabulica) is a biennial that forms offsets, but will also self-seed if you let it". Bukiniczia cabulica (formerly Aeoniopsis cabulica) is a biennial that forms offsets, but will also self-seed if you let it.

Zuzu do you know anything about this site? http://www.gbif.org/species/40...
This site shows Aeoniopsis cabulica to be the name, and Bukiniczia cabulica to be a synonym. http://www.plantnames.eu/gesla...

According to COL two of these names are accepted names, one is considered to be a provisionally accepted name.
Bukiniczia cabulica is an accepted name
Aeoniopsis is considered a provisionally accepted name
Dictyolimon macrorrhabdos is an accepted name

Research on photos under these three names show them all to be the same plant. So how would we handle that in our Database? I agree with Lori at this time for the three names. Seems to me that Bukiniczia cabulica should be the accepted name and the other two be listed as synonyms.

So it's a biennial rather than an ephemeral, monocarpic perennial, if I'm understanding the terms correctly (?). Confused All we have to do is get it through a winter and then hope it's happy enough to bloom and set seed...

If you do have some seed, Greg, I think I'd plant some outdoors in a sunken pot so I'd be sure where I put it and save some to plant indoors with my other starts. And if there are enough seeds, I'd put some in the fridge first and some I'll just plant. That should cover all the bases -- and IF I could get a plant out of that, all I'd have to do is get it through the next winter! This is one plant that is going to need some serious record-keeping until we know its parameters -- just like Laszlo's plant...

Marilyn, I've checked the web sites -- I'll e-mail Colorado and see if they are planning to offer Buki in the spring. Right now, no one seems to be offering it except Greg and I'll see what he can send and go from there. Thank You! for helping with this! MR

MR - it rained today so I didn't go out to look for seeds, it is supposed to be nicer tomorrow or Friday, so for sure I'll check it out! I have several young plants of this one. I'm hoping they just continue doing what they are doing, which is growing and looking great! Although last year, I left one out and brought one inside, and the one outside didn't make it, but it wasn't in the covered area, so it was getting rain, and I don't think it likes cold/wet combo! Thumbs up

I think it's the wet they don't like more than the cold. At least that's what I'm hoping! I get nervous when they give Zone 5 as it's coldest allowable -- right next to the house in sheltered areas we can create that as a microclimate, which is what I'm planning for with all my seedlings. And of course, no wet feet!

Did the one you brought inside make it, Greg? Thought they had to have a real winter? If they did make it, I'm thinking maybe I should bring my seedlings indoors instead of leaving them outside? MR

I read somewhere that it is suggested to let them self sow and save some of the seed to plant in early spring. That way you will have new plants and blooms every year within the colony.

But Lynn, what about my very first sempervivum seedlings sitting outside in pots? The ones I just photographed (plus their siblings). Do I bring them indoors or put them in the window wells? We did have some semps elsewhere but I never paid attention to them. *Blush* As much as I've learned here, it's still all new, and sometimes seems very contradictory! Confused MR

MR - I think each of us has our own way and idea! I'd leave your semps in a sheltered place outside, unless they seem like they're not liking that - then move them into a garage or something if needed. I've never had luck with semps being indoors, they seem to like lots of air flow.
What I moved inside was this Bukiniczia and I kept it on a windowsill with the window open a bit, it liked that. I watered a bit each week because it kept its leaves. In the spring I moved it outdoors keeping it sheltered from the rain. And this is the one which bloomed and is giving seed. I tip my hat to you.

I know, Greg, I just have to risk it. I am totally blown away by how nervous I am, all out of proportion, about these little guys! I don't think I've ever managed to get this obsessed about anything before! They are so beautiful Lovey dubby I think my mistake was starting to look at them through the jeweler's loupe -- they truly are like gems close up -- wish I knew how to photograph that and show you!

Do you have a macro setting on your camera MR?

Greg thank you so much for the information on your winter care for Bukiniczia cabulica. I am going to give that a try with mine.

ummm. I'm not sure. We have 2 cameras, both gifts, with all sorts of dials and one with even more gadgets. Truly, Mother Katherine and I are the only ones who use them, and we're both only one step above the Brownie Box point and shoot camera technology. The one I use the most is the one with fewer gadgets: It's a Canon PowerShot A570 (IS AiAF if that means anything). I've learned to use the portrait setting and from there click on the "plant" setting and zoom in.

The other one is also a Canon PowerShot S5IS and while I have the manual for that one, I'll admit I've never opened it. *Blush* It is supposed to have an Image stabilizer and it looks fancier, but I've never had as much luck with photos turning out. We had a guest here last month who loved it and took over a thousand photos in a week, but then she knew what she was doing -- and she was doing scenery and animals, not plant closeups...

Right at this moment I'm not going to study the manual, but maybe... Now that I've been able to take back the bookkeeping, maybe I'm up for something like this? (I need a smiley with its hair standing on end!) Big Grin

Did you say you were coming to visit? You can show me how to use these!! Thumbs up

I found something online which may help MR. You have a dial on the back of your camera which has a button and it is for Canon PowerShot A570, but my Nicon has a similar button the little tulip indicates macro mode. You may have to highlight to "turn it on" but it will allow you to take close up pictures. It also has a choice of manual focus (I don't think you want to do that) Just play with it a bit and I bet you will take better closeup pictures.

you would bush the center of that button to select I think.
