@JungleShadows Kevin are these getting close to transplanting? How will I know when to start planting them?

Well, Lynn, those look about the size of mine. No true leaves yet, or just a couple tiny ones.
I think we are supposed to wait till they look like tiny sempervivums. They don't, yet.
It is tricky... we need to wait for them to grow a bit...but grow WHERE? ... being so crammed up.
Maybe in layers? On top of each other?
:)

You may call it a win-win/lose-lose situation... if you hurry and plant them, you will lose some but the rest will probably grow nicely in more soil and space.
If you wait, they will be smaller a bit, but more will make it later on.
I guess, I'm not an expert.

Wow lynn, look at all that colour already!
Last year I left my seedlings until, as Calin says, they looked like mini semps and the leaves had hardened off. I don't think I lost many. Before that the roots are very delicate and you could well have lots of losses.

I threw what was left of my seed heads into pots a few weeks ago, but they didn't show any signs of growth, I assumed I'd harvested too early, but on my way to work this morning I noiced some tiny spects of green starting to come up, I can't wait to have a better look this evening Smiling

Lynn,

Those are getting close. You want at least a couple sets of true leaves although I have transplanted some at rthat size when the pot was VERY crowded. Wait for a bit of drizzle to do the transplanting and you'll have great success.

I have found that if the seedlings are growing VERY densely it is wise NOT to try to pull them apart to single plants but plant little clumps and then sort them out as they get a good bit bigger. Each time i have this happen iu say "i'm going to spread the seed out more" but i still get some that are way too densely planted.

Good luck!

Kevin

I had a better look yesterday and they do look like the very beginings of semps, not weeds :)
I was going to take a picture but my camera had no battery left, so it's on charge and I'll take some pics tonight. Not that there's much to see yet lol. I usually grow seeding of all types indoors until the are big enough to plant out. That way I can keep a close eye on them and (hopefully) they want for nothing. I feel like my new babies outside are very vulnerable - I think I'm loosing the plot!

Have been a plant lover all my life
markb said:Hi folks, Haven't visited here for some time. Just started my crosses today. Mostly different jovibarba bee pollinated crosses. A thousand seeds most likely. Maybe next year I'll try hand pollinating, but that's not likely. Started many other species of seed from Seed exchanges. a bit over the top but it's hard to control that desire to have it all.

I have to ask, I am new how do you cross them ?

I am so much enjoying reading all that you all have to say. It is making me feel better that I will get it together..

I lost every one of my winter-sown-in-the-bottle semp seedlings (all 120 of them) ...due to underwatering and over-exposure...just general neglect due to distractions of life and maybe a little too many succulents to care for successfully. Sad
Kate, Glad to see your semplings and Julia's and others(?) doing so well. I will be attempting them again in the future... Big Grin
