Early eyes, The larger pot has a leftover section of a noid white potted for the winter and held in an unheated garage. Brought out into the sun during our recent "spring" weather.
I am with you on that. My established peonies are still under a couple of inches of shredded cypress bark mulch. Hopefully, that will hold them back at least until the middle of March. My fernies always break thru early. Last year, I had one leafing out about an inch high then was hit with a zero temp for one night. Didn't hurt it though and it bloomed along with the others. Those are tough little buggers since they are native to some pretty harsh environments.
I will tease you along with updated pics. I have tulips, daffs and hyacinths popping up along with fernies breaking thru the surface. Still early yet, though. I have a pic of my company van, before I retired in '08, covered with ice on the radio antenna and ladder rack. Taken on March 4 so it is not over yet. We can have hard freezes until late April.
We have been known to have blizzards in April and sometimes snow into May. Granted, it doesn't last long, but still, enough is enough, ya know. I will be waiting anxiously for the teasers!!
This is the potted white carried out of the garage for some fresh air. It will probably be in and out until the night freezes are gone. Appears to be doing well in the pot but most peony lovers are aware of this is not the way to raise peonies except for possibly one season. This one will be transplanted in the fall.
This is another double red fernleaf divided and transplanted in the fall of '09. Bloomed last year and shows good increase in eyes. I don't know if I have a 'fernie thumb' or not but I have had a very high success rate. I think most people shy away from dividing them, thinking their diminutive size makes them delicate. They are tough as nails if you handle their roots gently.
Removed the mulch from the standard peonies. We are looking at 50 to 60 degree days with possible frosty nights for awhile. They will get a chance to acclimate.
The two above pics are the most advanced of all the standard peonies. First pic may be 'Emile Debatene' bought from Lowe's so nothing is certain. The other may be a noid pink single. I did not keep records until buying from the growers.
This one is the potted noid beginning to unfurl some leaves. I could possibly have a bloom by April 1, if the weather stays warm.
