I'd come sit a spell if I could and you could sweeten the pot with a tray of sticky buns!

WOW!! Anna that is gorgeous. I just got caught up on this thread. I wanted to put a pergola in our garden area but so far nothing has happened. I'm afraid if we did, I would be sitting out there by myself cause DH doesn't like sitting out and being bothered by the bugs.

The gnats are horrible this year; there is some "natural" bug dope called "Buggins" that really does a great job at repelling the gnats. Smells pretty good too. I used quite a bit of it last Saturday when we were out all day and evening setting up fireworks. I had to reapply a couple of times, but I was sweating too. LOL I need to get some more and just keep a bottle of it out there. I've only seen it at Menards.

Guess I have to go "train" the uppermost wisteria "branches"................they are needing to know how to get over the top of the pergola. Going to attempt that now, barring a fly-off the ladder.
Well, the plants are doing great in and around the pergola. I had to repot the cleodendrom so took it off the shepherd's hook and hung it from a chain around a beam. I also hung the 2 dipladanias there a couple of days ago. One of them is Mom's, I think the smaller one. You can see that the sweet potato vines are taking off, the wisteria will choke me some day when I am snoozing in a swinging chair, and the plants I dug up from Mom's flower bed and planted along the one outside corner are growing nicely. You'll have to go back to see how they looked 4-6 weeks ago.
The white brug is Creamsickle, the double pink is a NOID, and the one not blooming yet is Sexy Lady.
I am trying wisteria on an arbor growing out of a container. I wonder if I should just plant it in the ground? I was concerned that the soil and root knot nematodes might harm or kill it.

I'm looking forward to having our pergola - attached to our deck, and therefor to our home. Right now we're working on the inside - patching & painting the walls that got broken when our home was moved.

Becky, mine is planted in a mix of crappy soil, some clay, and rocks. LOL It's doing great, but I will tell you that I watered it LOTS last summer, its first year. And when it got cold I put an additional bag of cypress mulch around the base of the plant. I would say that it's pretty well established now. Maybe a pot wouldn't let yours develop the root system it needs??? IDK..........
Anna - thank you for your info. I, too, was thinking that being in a container might restrict its root growth. But I am also worried about root knot nematodes. I don't know if it could be damaged/killed by those bad nematodes since it is not typically grown in Central Florida. I have it growing on a small arbor.
Many of the plants I have success with that are not typically grown in my zone and area do well for me in containers vs. the ground. But wisteria looks like it could get pretty big if given the root room. My Wisteria is the American Wisteria. I forget the cultivar name. I believe the Chinese cultivar gets much bigger and can become invasive in the right conditions. Since mine is growing on a small arbor, I was thinking that it would stay smaller and be more compact in a container. No one here grows it, so I have nothing to compare it to.
Yours is beautiful!

Becky - I looked up Amethyst Falls, and it's a gorgeous flower! If only our zone 3a could grow plants like this!! I'll be happy if my Datura blooms, and it's native to Tx

Anna, that is amazing, our pergola is sagging a bit in the middle (it was here and doing that when we bought the house 10 years ago). I want to model our replacement to look like yours some what. Thanks for sharing you picks!
