Hi! I've been growing houseplants for many years. I use to have over 250 houseplants but since my move to a new house I had to reduce the number because of light issues. I just came back from a plant sale at Longwood Gardens and I am always excited to add new plants to my collection since it seems like every year between March and April I lose a few, some times I wish I lived a little further south. Each May 1st all my houseplants go outside and spend the summer in various spots around my garden. They hate coming back in when the weather gets cool again but then so do I. Many of my inside winter plants are herbs and spices along with a 5' coffee tree that is now producing berries by the hand fulls. I also have a large, well only 13, collection of different types of Sansevieria. I'm sending along a few pictures of well behaved plants. Coffee, Perennial Basil shrub, Neem tree, Bay tree, and All Spice Tree

Welcome!
Hello and welcome to All Things Plants and the Houseplant Forum. I am new here too. I live in Colorado and I don't even want to count all my plants. Hilarious! Some of my plants go out but of course most don't. I hope you enjoy this place as much as I do. You have some nice looking plants.

Thanks for your response Leda. I lost my youngest son eight years ago when he was 23. There are days when I see something and I think of him and cry. That sadness never goes away. I started to study horticulture just before he passed and it helped me to focus on something beautiful not just empty sadness. I'm sorry for you loss. Stay busy and go to your happy place when you begin to feel sad. Hugs. M

@Treehugger, we have a lot in common. It has been almost 5 years without Josh. Josh always bought me flowers for the container gardens on Mother's Day. Last year I decided to buy a couple of African Violets. I don't know what got into me but I kept buying more and more. As it turns out, African Violets ARE MY HAPPY PLACE! (And maybe a few other houseplants too.)

I am so sorry to hear of your loss and yes, I know the pain never goes away.

I am so glad you have enjoyed horticulture and are continuing in that interest. You will have a lot to share with us!

Thanks, Leda!

Leda and 'treehugger', I am so sorry.
My heart breaks for both of you - I can't even imagine...
Hoping you both find peace.

Leda, Columneas have always been somewhat hard to find. I've only ever seen them online - never at any greenhouse in our area.

I'll be doing some perusing of ebay auctions this summer. I'll let you know if I find anything!

treehugger...it seems that I should remember you. Were you on Dave's Garden too?
I have a few Sansevierias myself...most of them are among the sorely neglected.
Fabulous looking plants in your photos.

I've been working two jobs the past couple of years and our daughter (freshman) is in nearly every sport including dance, so my 'plant time' and my 'forum time' have both taken the back seat!

Hello to Cathy, too, and welcome!

Nan @NanW,

Hirt's garden had one left the other day. Some of their stuff looks great and some of is very marginal. I don't have enough space for one. I have also seen them at PJ's greenhouse in Florida. They have quality stuff!!! They sell a lot on eBay. I was only adding my vote that it is a low light plant for another member. Thank you, though.

I have looked at Dave's greenhouse for variety pictures. I do belong to quite a few online groups.

Thank you, I look forward to getting to know you (again or not. Hilarious! ) I remember busy from the good ol' days!

I can't wait for spring. It seems every year around this time I lose one or two houseplants. I guess they just can't wait to go outside any longer. Everything I have inside goes out for the summer. A trick I learned a long time ago is if you want a larger houseplant you plant it in the ground for the summer. The only draw back is space inside. I've been trying to limit my houseplants to the very special but most plants are very special. My husband offered to get me a greenhouse. We have a bear problem here so I don't want the heart break of having it knocked over or worse. I'm trying to limit myself to cactus and succulents, begonias, sansevieria, and spices and herbs. Still I never seem to have enough room.

Hi, I'm new to this website and have found my favorite forum already (Houseplants)! Where we live currently space is limited, but I currently have fourteen houseplants indoors and seven "summering" outdoors (so that makes a total of twenty-one). I have your typical "tropical" houseplants, succulents, and cacti. Thanks for reading!

Welcome!

I love houseplants! I have a lot of African Violets, but also have some, well, this and that! Hilarious! I love non-sticker succulents with color. It is too early for us to put them outside.

Happy growing Thumbs up

SongofJoy,
Plants are some of the best company. nodding

Leda,
I have a couple Optimara AVs, but I've run out of room for anymore houseplants (for now). Nonsticker ones? You mean you don't like getting poked!? Lol, I don't enjoy it either, but I've found some cacti have the most beautiful flowers. I have a couple Kalanchoe blossfeldianas ('Flaming Katy'), a Kalanchoe porphyrocalyx ('Pearl Bells'), and an Agave (I think it's A. parviflora), but that's it for my succulents. My Mother ordered me an Aloe ('Shark Aloe') online, so I'm waiting for it to arrive to add it to my collection. We have had warm weather here, so the cacti are outside already. Last week, it was 87! Thanks for reading, this was longer than intended.

@PlantoManiac08

The African Violets are a long story but I have a lot of them and a most of them are noids. I ordered some off eBay but then a friend told me about an incredible price at the grocery store and they were multicolored and beautiful so I bought quite a few. Then I started buying houseplants that were known as air cleaners and a few unusual houseplants. I have a few Kalanchoe but I don't know their names either. Hilarious!

That shark aloe sounds very interesting. I may have to take a trip to Lowes and enable you to enable me. Hilarious!

Leda,
I enjoy hearing others stories, so if you ever have the time and feel like sharing, I'd love to hear about your AVs. Sadly, our grocery stores don't seem to carry the healthiest plants (AVs or otherwise), so I no longer look there.

Haha, I have a few "air cleaners" myself. What "unusual" plants do you have? There are quite a number of Kalanchoes, I am lucky I guess in that mine are pretty common (lucky with the names, otherwise I'd probably have no clue "who" they are).

My Mom bought the Aloe online when she was purchasing some outdoor plants. But, if you come home with a car load from Lowes, it's not my fault. Hilarious!

Okay, I'm confused! Shark aloe or Shark agave? I know of an agave called "Shark Skin" (because the leaf texture feels just like a shark).

Don't forget we have a succulent forum, too - if you come over, I'll see you there!
In the end, only kindness matters.

Sheryl,
It says 'Shark Aloe.' *scratches head* Here's the link to their website (Michigan Bulb Company): http://www.michiganbulb.com/pr...

I have posted a couple times on the C&S forum already, thank you for the invite! I will surely see you there then! Smiling C&S are another interest of mine (in addition to houseplants).

Hello everyone,

Here are some pictures of my house plants. I, unfortunately, don't have a lot of windows for late fall/winter/early spring and then try I kick them outside during the summer.

Unfortunately, I don't know the names of them.

The variegated vine I got in college during my Horticulture class and have had him for close to 5 or 6 years now. I now have 2 more starts growing from the original plant.

The evergreen looking guy, my husband bought our first Christmas that we were married as our first Christmas tree. Man has he grown.
I also have some red basil & lavender growing in a pot

Howdy! Welcome to ATP! I saw your cacti on the C&S forum. The variegated vine is called a 'Golden Pothos,' or Epipremnum aureum. There are many different Pothos cultivars. Your tree is called a 'Norfolk Island Pine' or Araucaria heterophylla. They both look well taken care of!

Someone on the C&S forum IDed your cacti.

Oh man, that was totally not the picture I meant to post of them. Let me try it again...

Back when it was nice enough to take the plants outside. Shortly after this the Norfolk Island Pine (thanks Planto!) was blown over. He needed re-potted anyway.
