Mike: Incredible blooms, as always. I "supposedly" bought Vavoom as a patio tree rose in January as a bare root. Turns out it's Eureka, which I already have. Tell me more about "Love and Peace". I think I need to get that one.

Sue: I have "Heaven on Earth" and I'm considering send it to hell. It's the only rose I have that constantly has rust, and the flowers turn white the 2nd day after they open. What's up with that ???

Open question to all about Palatine's: Should I even consider anything from them that lists it only to Zone 9b considering I'm in 10a ????? I'm seriously looking at Ghislaine de Feligonde...thanks to SUE !!!! LOL

CalSurf (Was gonna say Mike, but we have two Mikes here :D ) - I'm no help w/warmer zones.. I know I love Palatine. :)

Mike - Holy crapzilla batman. Wow. That's wowsers enough to make anyone jealous. I wish I'd seen Vavoom that vibrant here.. always looks more apricot than true orange juice here.

Doesn't Palatine just use 5b to 9b as a default setting? Do they say that any of their roses will grow in zone 10? The roses that need a cold winter to grow and bloom well, such as the Gallicas, for instance, stipulate zones 4-8. Zone 9 isn't even in the running for those. And how much difference is there between 9b and 10? It's not as though 9b gets lots and lots of frost. Get the Ghislaine, JD. You won't regret it, I'm sure.

Toni: It really DOES look like the color of orange juice...which is why I wanted it so bad in the first place. I saw 10 of them in a big planting and the color was incredible...and that was in April here when it was still cool.

Sorry Zu, we cross-posted.
Yes, Palatine's did list a few for zone 10...don't remember which ones, though.
It's the mildew issue that has me worried about Ghislaine in this fog pit that I live in.
How is your E von Schubert doing ?

It's growing, growing, growing, but not blooming. It was blooming when I bought it, but not since then.

Oh shoot JD, not good news about Heaven on Earth, my Mom told me yesterday that she used to have it and didn't like the droopy blooms and now you mention rust. Oh well, we'll see.
And now, where are you going to put that Ghislaine de Feligonde?? (I can't even pronounce it, I just let Zuzu do it Whistling )

I love Heaven on Earth and I've never seen any rust on it. No droopy blooms that I recall either.

If Palatine didn't recommend Ghislaine for zone 10, it wouldn't have had anything to do with mildew, JD. The lower zones get a lot more mildew. Maybe it's not very heat-resistant. Mine's in the shade, so I couldn't tell you what it does in the sun. I do know that it's a skimpy bloomer, but that's probably because it's in the shade.

JD - Fogpit. LOLLLL! There's already about 6-8" of snow on the mountains (couldn't get a clear shot this morning.. the colder air from last night is keeping in all the polution ... bleh!). Wanna trade? We're never happy w/what we have. I'd LOVE to live in an area where I'd see fog.. that's a once or twice a year phenomenon here. I've seen Vavoom only in the nursery & wasn't impressed.. maybe I'll pick it up next year. And wouldn't Ghislaine be pronounced: gesz-LAYN deh feh-LEE-goown-deh? That's how I would pronounce it, but I don't speak French Smiling

Thanks for the feedback Mike. I've really come to love Vavoom. When I first saw it in catalogs some years ago I was concerned it might be too garish, but then I saw an entire bed of them at Witherspoon Rose Culture in North Carolina, and was very taken with them. I ordered mine from Garden Valley Ranch. Unfortunately it arrived very dried out - it had been inadequately wrapped for moisture protection to be shipped cross country. But I potted it up and put it in shade all spring and it slowly began to grow. Then I moved it into part sun and has bloomed nicely this summer, but has remained extremely short - not like the larger plants I've seen. Still, I'm glad to have it, and its short height has been perfect for the deck.

French doesn't stress syllables as hard as English does, so most syllables have the same emphasis, but you'd put slightly more emphasis on the following all-capped syllables (and the first syllable is g as in "go," not g as in "gel"): geez-LEN-duh-fell-ee-GOND-uh.

Kinda makes "Zepherine Drouhine" sound easy. (Yes, I know I probably spelled it wrong !) How DOES one pronounce that, anyway ?

You have misspelled it indeed. It's Zephirine Drouhin and it's pronounced zef-i-REEN droo-ANH. That's an "a" as in apple, and the last "n" is not pronounced distinctly. It's sort of like the "ng" in working, but only if you're trailing off to sleep as you're saying it. It sort of disappears.

In my experience, the most commonly mispronounced rose is Cecile Brunner. It was named after a woman, so it can't be pronounced SEE-sul. That's a man's name (Cecil). And she was a German woman, so the last name is not broon-NAY. It should be pronounced se-SEEL BROON-nur.
