I lost the tag on this one, but from the year I got it and the source it should be one of the ones below.
quartz rainbow, viola francois, sophisticated ruffles, catching the light, celestial angel, spacecoast gold bonanza, or Wonder of it all
I got it from: http://www.ofts.com/photo/dl_v...

Thanks Frillylily,

It sure look likes Midred Mitchell, the first two were bought quite few years back from Lowe's I think, don't have any idea what they are, I just enjoy their bloom.... The red ones is on the short side...I can tell the yellow one not El Desperado, thanks God it kind of pretty...funny think is I got another one from Lowe's (in a bag) and with different name (Playground I think) and supposed to have orange eye but it blooms just like this one...

My guesses would be Custard Candy & Crimson Pirate for these 2.

The 6th one is too big to be Rosy Returns, although I do have Rosy Returns somewhere in another garden and hope to identify which one it is this summer. Smiling

The name of the daylily is Bela Lugosi. It has won several awards including Award of Merit and Lenington All American Award. Apparently this last award is a big one, given annually to one and only one daylily that performs especially well in most regions of the USA.

I need to go out and label these plants.

I have done the labeling chore. I found that though I started with a single plant of the Hemerocallis Bela Lugosi, there are now eight. I also have the Hemerocallis fulva 'Kwanso', and it too has multiplied over the last two years. It looks like it won't be blooming for another two weeks (pure guess). This picture was taken last June.

I guess I will be doing some dividing come fall. Whistling Perhaps I will post them on my website as fall approaches. I really don't know whether these two are saleable plants, and sure wouldn't know what to ask, but I will give it some thought. I know next to nothing about daylilies. *Blush*

Well, it does sound simple to just label a plant and then you know what it is. I do that, but then the critters move the labels and dig the plants. Old plants that have been dug and thought were gone forever tend to regrow, and plants that once thrived sometimes die. I received a shipment of plants and two different daylilies showed up in one clump when they bloomed. So there are many different reasons the names get mixed up. But it is not just daylilies, the same thing happens with roses and other plants. But, daylilies seem to multiply much faster and need to be divided much more often and then that presents another opportunity to get the labels and plants confused. I know I have to be very careful when dividing and labeling, and still often get confused. The good thing is that you get to recheck everything normally about every year when they bloom, however so many look almost alike it is often not a certainty. Naturally the larger the operation and the more people involved and the more steps done in the process the larger the chances of mislabeling happening. Even now I could not positively tell the difference in most Kwanso and Flore Pleno plants and there seems to be many look alikes and similar plants. With the new color changing daylilies the job of identifying the plants is certainly going to get even harder.

I only have two daylily varieties, Larry. Keeping up with just the two will be a piece of cake. The plants don't even look alike when not in bloom and certainly, when they bud, the buds are about as different as day and night.

But I sure get the "rest of the story". I have 80 varieties of orchids, and if you count all I have had over the last five years, that total doubles. I have several dozen NOID orchids where the labels got lost along the way. The good thing is that I have pictures of the flower of every single variety I have ever owned, so once the plant blooms, I know what it is and can then get it properly labeled.

Ken, your 'Kwanso' looks more like 'Flore Pleno'. The flowers are typically more "chaotic" in 'Kwanso' because it tends to have more petaloid stamens.

Ken and Larry, I hope I'm not preaching to the choir, here, but have you tried using the zinc metal stake plant markers, with the 12 inch long metal legs? I get them from The Lily Auction site. The image is from their listing. (They are an instant buy. No waiting for an auction to end!) I've found them to have the most reasonable prices so far. These markers hold up to weather and they don't disturb nearly as easily as the plastic markers. I just started using them, this Spring (2016), and there's been no disturbance to them thus far. The professionals use these, so I figure that they're good enough for li'l ol' me, too!! I tip my hat to you.

Also, I find that if I handle one group of fans from one cultivar at a time and label every separated fan or clump of fans, before digging up the next cultivar, reduces (not foolproof!) the chance of mixups. Once the daylily is planted, I'll attach this temporary label to a landscape fabric pin and pin it to the ground nearby, temporarily, until I can make up a permanent metal label for it. Kind of a "critter-resistant" tactic! It even works through the wintertime!!

Again, hope I'm not preaching to the choir!!!.... *Blush*

As always, Happy Gardening!!!

I am frugal (my wife says "cheap"), @bloominholes2fill. I had some old mini-blinds in the attic. Why I kept them is beyond me. I cut those mini-blinds in 4" and 6" length punch a hole in one end, and write with a soft pencil or with a Sharpie Industrial Super Permanent Ink pen. I will make a point on the "label" if I want to stick it in potting/garden soil. The mini-blinds can easily be cut with scissors and weather/sun doesn't seem to affect them. I either tie them to the plant, to a pot, attach them to a stake, or stick them in the potting soil.

@sooby, you certainly could be right. This name was on the label that came with the one (donated) plant. I have no clue.
