Anna, cool pics of the grands at the cenote. They are a lot of fun to swim in and to dive in. That's kind of how I ended up in this part of the world, used to be a fanatic diver and fell in love with diving the cenotes. I don't dive anymore but I still like swimming in them. The water temp is usually a constant 72°f all year, it can feel really refreshing in the summer or after hiking in to one through the jungle. We used to jump in and throw down our tanks and sometimes it was so much fun I'd just climb out and do it again.

They look really cool! Is there anything living in them?

Jonna, what are the cenotes, actually? Underground springs? Diving in them sounds very adventurous to me... and so fun to have that little glimpse into your life! Smiling

I get why things like screenings may not be covered after a certain age ...but ....it IS a powerful statement of sorts isn't it??

Not to mention, Medicare kicks in at sixty- five ...so we pay into it from the moment we begin working....yet it may only cover certain things for ten years tops....hmmmm

Bet if I were working or drawing from a huge estate I would not get a letter saying : "hey girl, now that you are 75. you don't have to pay any more taxes..."

The cenotes are underground rivers and run throughout this area. They were formed when the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs hit here. There are some small fish that live near the openings where there is some light, basically places where the roof fell in. Deeper there are some small blind fish. Nothing else, it's limestone so really alkaline water and without light nothing lives. There are huge caverns completely underwater and the water is so clear that you can't see it so diving in it is like flying. Enormous stalactites and stalagmites that were formed when the caves were drier during an ice age. In fact, I've seen black walls and charcoal from old fires as well as small handprints on the walls, all from when the caves were dry from the ice. Completely underwater now but once they were dry. It's magical and beautiful and can be very dangerous as well.

The Maya consider the openings to be entrances to their version of hell and you will usually find small altars hidden away near the entrance to pacify the Alux who are tricky spirits who can make things miserable. The Maya also say that they came from the caves, the first men. During some difficult times in the past Maya have hidden in the caves for years. Their creation myths mostly center around the caves and the heroes and rulers of the underworld.

Many of the cenotes are open for tourist tours and are really beautiful, tropical, jungle paradise.

Cave niches with alters and skeletons guarding can be found so many places throughout the world ...understably can reason out the importance of caves for shelter.

Fascinating! Thank you so much for telling about them and the history of how they formed as well as the history of the Maya in relation to them. I simply love learning things like this. One can read it or watch shows on Nat. Geo & such but it's always much more interesting to hear about it from someone you know.

Thanks for all the good wishes. My right eye lid is swollen and red - it will be a glorious black and blue soon. However, I am NOT grumpy about it because my vision does not seem to be affected. And I'm not in much pain. I have very little energy so I'm staying in bed with furbabies alternating watching over me. With rest and no more accidents, I expect a full recovery. I'm not rushing it. Friend Rafael came by with shrimp and fish so I bought a lot. Tony went to town and got chicken legs and ice so I'm well taken care of.

Thinking happy thoughts for all my friends here. I'm so grateful for all of you.

hugs, katie
