Fred, I keep going back to look at these two of your seedlings.
With reddish base, complex patterns, and large bloom size,
in my opinion, you've won the trifecta of characteristics on these two, Fred.
Can't wait to see how they look when the temps are more consistent.

Thanks Shirlee, last year after cutting back I wanted to continue to do a few tets and I decided to do mostly patterns because I really liked BUDDYS SPOOK and some of Trimmers things. The seedlings that I have posted here are nothing that I had given a lot of thought too, just what I had to use last year.

This is the only seedling from this cross I kept from 2014
I had about a dozen, this one looks promising

That first one sure has a scape I dream of. The second one has 'something' that keeps me coming back looking. The colors and the bigger pattern.

Those are really beautiful blooms, and I'm totally drawn to that first one for some reason. I really hope they continue to do well for you. I just received a really nice DF of BUDDY'S SPOOK from James Hall yesterday, although both had scapes that were already cut back, so it may be a while before I see any blooms -- but at least I have it now and can daydream of all the crosses I'll make in the future.

Well I had several seedlings bloom this morning. Three from the mobile flower show of 2015 and one of my own I just did because I happened to like the plant so well. I set a lot of pods on that plant and last year it almost faded away on me. This year it is making a good comeback, guess it needed a rest. Not only did I set a lot of pods on it, I also divided it into several clumps. I am surprised the seedling is blooming and the parent has yet to send up scapes. I think it made a beautiful large bloom.

Seedling #2 from the 2015 Mobile Flower Show: I can see a lot of resemblance. The bloom is more orange and every thing about the plant is larger than seedling #1.

Seedling #3: I think if the blotchiness will leave with warmer weather this one will be really nice.

I like the first one best.

Do seedlings change much as they get to be established plants? Not only in appearance, but with respect to things like height, bud count, substance etc.?

Fred,
Those are gorgeous! I now have scapes on Lillian's Big Owie and Lillian's Deceitful Lies (still waiting on Lillian's Legends and Lies Whistling ). These blooms make me even more excited!

The first one and last one are my faves!

needrain,
I was hoping some of the more experienced seedling growers would jump in and answer your questions. I know from experience that my fans I purchase and plant do tend to improve in general over time: Stronger scapes, bigger blooms, more buds etc. So based on that I would have to assume the same thing would be true for seedlings, even more so. I would really love to see some feedback here on your questions by the true hybridizers who grow hundreds or even thousands of seedlings. I know the process is normally to grow the plants for at least three years and watch how they evolve over time. Still more specific information especially on bud count, and branching etc. would be very informative for the rest of us.

Nice narrow rim on those two eyed ones, Larry. They aren't in my favorite color combinations, but I very much favor narrow rims. Also, if an eyed cultivar has a rim, I want the eye well defined and the rim to match the eye in color (and be narrow), and those two fit the bill. Thumbs up

My first seedling (of the season) bloomed yesterday, sort of, and I'm not going to inflict an image of it on you. Glare The bloom did not open properly, and now I am left scratching my head wondering if that was due to our cool/cold night, or perhaps too dry of a seedling bed (it is a raised seedling bed on drip irrigation, which gets the drip on Tuesdays and Fridays per drought restrictions), or if it is just the seedling itself. The cross was ARCTIC LACE x BALLERINA ON ICE. (It has been my observation that although BALLERINA is maybe a CMO - at least I read that somewhere - it does not seem to do that well here in that regard. Or maybe that plant also is not getting enough water.)
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

There are some beauties here that will certainly get named and registered.

Donald,
While some hybridizers make selections from the first bloom and trash the rest, we have ample garden space to let ours grow for the 3 years that you would normally give a new purchase for evaluation.
Some seedlings tell all there is to tell in the first bloom season while others show dramatic improvement by the 2nd and 3rd year.
The answer can be yes to all the attributes you listed and a few additional ones for those that show improvement over a couple of years.
I would have trashed at least a few that have turned out to be real beauties if they were only seen the first year. When daylilies are moved it sets them back and they have to re-establish to perform so they may need to stay in the same place for 3 years.

Nice seedlings Larry, the first year seedlings normally will bloom earlier than the parents, after the first year they will settle down and bloom at the correct time.

I agree about the three year thing, most daylilies have to stay in one place for a length of time to show there potential. Here it's a little different because we have hardly any winter and they recover much faster, so I know after the second year if I will register the daylily or not. I also have a selection process that works really well for me, I never select a daylily until it reblooms, the rebloom will show me what scape improvement has taken place, like height, bud count and branching. There can be a big difference between that first scape and that rebloom scape on a first year seedling. The second year should show good all around scape improvement. None of the seedlings I have posted have been selected to keep because none have rebloomed. The bloom itself will basically remain the same, may get a little larger and the weather can cause some slight changes in the color.
This is a seedling that Kathleen ask me to keep, its
been in the same place four years, a huge clump,
branched like a tree, now I have to go back to my
archives to see what the parents are.

I absolutely love that one. I shared that one with my mother and ask her what she thought... She sent me a crying emoji in a text when I told her it wasn't mine or going to be hers... We are both drooling over that one.
