Hi, my name is Cindy. I first started out on Dave's Garden in 2002 before coming here. My main hobby is daylilies. I have been growing and hybridizing daylilies for over 20 years. In 2014 I happened to check on the iris forum here and that started a craze for irises. I now have 33. Before all the gardening began, many, many years ago, I worked as a secretary for a major Detroit newspaper. After getting married and having 2 daughters the gardening craze began. It first started as a veggie garden but gradually the veggies gave way to daylilies and now the daylilies are giving way to the irises. My hobbies are crocheting, bird watching, fishing and collecting jewelry and gemstones. Going to gem shows is my favorite thing to do. A year and a half ago I lost my l9 year old cat and have not had the desire to replace him with another pet as of yet. Next year, if all goes well, we plan on moving north to a small cottage on a lake my husband inherited. We will need to downsize quite a bit but I will continue to grow daylilies and iris, only I will then have deer to contend with. It will be nice to get out of city living and wake up to the birds singing.

Hi ! My name is Lucy & we are on the down side of irises because of age & the difficulty taking care of them. I joined DG about 2011 (I think) as Iris MA. State abbreviation for Massachusetts. Then moved to cubits. I didn't know we could keep the same name so became irisarian. When Dave set up ATP we followed the iris there.
My husband John & I prefer medians, although we grow some TBs & a bed of Siberians. John has stopped being a judge & I probably will do the same because of difficulties getting around to gardens now. He is a biologist so has more knowledge of plants than I do. I worked as a librarian. Tough taking care of plants this year so John has done most of the work. We both do a bit of hybridizing with SDBs & MTBs. I need many more lessons on the computer to do trick with photos etc & also my new digital camera. I really enjoy the posts on the iris forum.

I was also on DG -- but left when the new owners removed Dave from management -- and followed Dave to Cubits, and then here.

Jolana -- I agree that there were lots of unpleasant people at DG. I just do not understand that. Blinking

I never was on Gardenweb -- but heard lots of negative things about that place too. Glad that I missed all of that.

You're right Celia -- we never will. Smiling

Starting out saying "My name is" makes me feel my addiction is worse than it is Rolling on the floor laughing
Anyway, here goes:
My name is Valerie and I am a gardening addict. I have been since I was a child. I grew many more irises 25 years ago, but gradually shifted over to perennials that could withstand more shade as the trees on our property got taller and taller. We have since thinned and limbed the pines up, and my irises have appreciated that. Some I haven't seen for years are now blooming again! I had shifted over my collecting to daylilies and hosta, but now that my irises are blooming again, I am again adding to my irises.

My two little garden helpers are in my avatar. They are Schipperkes and love to be where I am and are very curious to see whatever I am doing.

Well, let me join the crowd and let you know that I have been lurking on this forum for quite some time, but since I didn't have any "pretty, named irises", only a few NOIDs, I always felt that I had nothing to share. But I enjoyed everyone's comments on growing these beauties and photos.I have been gifted a few named irises and am happy to say that they have settled in quite well. So, I'm looking forward to adding some "real" irises and iris beds. My DH and I build our home in midstate SC, between the state capital Columbia and Charleston on 2.5 acres. So I have plenty of room to add my evolving iris and daylily beds. I just need to add plants. For over 20 years, I mainly maintained house foundation borders (shrubs mostly) and a flower border in the back. Several years ago, I tried my hand at veggie gardening, but I was a newbie and made lots of mistakes (foremost, it was too large) that frustrated me and turned me off. I tried again last year, but had problems with deer and couldn't deal with the excessive heat. I have always loved the challenge of growing new plants indoors and now I'm branching outdoors.

I was born and raised in Charleston, SC and have always loved going on garden tours, but never had time for my own garden, as I was a working woman since a young age. I joined DG in 2008, Cubits and now I'm here since 2010 mainly in the houseplant, C & S, and several other forums. I worked several years as administrative secretary at various state agencies, until health problems crept up and I had to apply for disability. Thus, I have more time for gardening and for drooling over everyone's beautiful photos. And look forward to participating in this forum.

I love reading, especially my bible, several hobbies - beading, crotching, sewing and most of all my gardening. It's my therapy and keeps me sane. DH has retired from his primary job as an electronica control technician at a chemical plant, but is now busy with his part-time hobby, cabinet-making and woodworking. He doesn't like gardening, but supports me in my love affair, and I support his.

Gabe, this is a great idea! I am enjoying this forum, but this tells me more about all the knowledgeable people around here!

My name is Barbalee, and I'm an addict...an addict to many things. I'm an addict to irises and daylilies when it comes to flowers. I have lived overseas for many years and have just bought a house in Amarillo, Texas, so that's giving me the itch! Almost no one here grows much in the way of flowers, and I want to change that. I grew up in Ohio, and my mom had glorious iris and daylily beds, so that's where I originally got the virus. I haven't been able to do anything with my itch until now. I joined the forum just this spring and since then have taken on growing 105 different daylilies and just 15 irises. I'm bidding on LA for five more. I'm a single mom of three grown sons and would like to adopt a pet, but it looks like I'll be going back to Afghanistan on a contract job this fall, so that has to wait. Until then, I'm doing my best to build raised beds and transplanting all those flowers into better homes.

So glad to read about all of you!

My name is Betsy and I collect any and every flowering plants I can get my hands on...I live almost all my life in Texas. My mom starting growing Asian veggies after she retired; and from the seeds she gave me, I started growing these when my boys were little over 20 years ago to show them how seeds turn into the veggies we eat.

After joining GW and DG- I got addicted to trading seeds and plants (OH, I couldn't get enough of trading!)
I follow Dave to Cubits and then here; I have gained so much knowledge from all the gardeners on all the forums.

I wanted a 'cottage' type garden but it has become a plethora of plants plunked in every space available.
I started with one small bed for veggies but soon had beds all along the back and side fences.

A dear friend gave me some of her blue flag iris which has been in her garden over 50 years, and that is how I got my first iris. Can't believe some of you have 300-400 irises!!!
Some of you have kindly traded with me your irises -- so thank you so much for sharing. I look forward to acquiring more info and irises in the near future.

I take joy in photographing blooming plants, birds, butterflies, and the beauty of God's creations.

My name is Bonnie a.k.a. BB, Mama,. Granny, Sugarbean, and some I will not list here. Most of you know all about me as I am no shrinking violet and usually have something to say about everything.... whether I know what I am talking about or not. As to when I first fell in love with irises, I wrote a quite lengthy post on the thread 'when did you fall in love' on this iris forum so I will not repeat that here.

Perhaps I can tell you something about me that you do not know. Just another love of my life that is separate from gardening. I play several stringed instruments and taught my children to play them too. My children are quite talented and we became known locally for our harmonies and haunting melodies. Several people from the Smithsonian came to AR to hear my family sing and we learned that some of our songs were over five hundred years old. We performed throughout AR and then began to get offers to travel so we did. We played Scottish festivals in various places, Bear Frolics, Old Time Music Festivals in Indiana, fiddler's convention in West VA, Mountain Folks music festivals in MO and TX and in 1984 we were asked to represent AR at the worlds Fair in New Orleans. I have played and sang for the governors of 46 of our states. I have been well compensated for playing... yes playing for it seems ridiculous to pay someone for having such fun.

I heard some wonderful music during my travels. An old gnarled man in TN with fingers so twisted he could not make a fist put the bow to the fiddle strings and made that fiddle cry..... my heart wept a little too. An old blind black gentleman played the blues using a glass bottle neck over his finger on the guitar stings as he sat on a crate near a railroad yard in New Orleans. He lived there. So does his music. I sometimes go back there in my dreams.

All five of my children played, sang and three of them earned trophy's and prize money clogging (what we locally call jig dancing). I met so many great performers and musicians after the 'official' performance around campfires when we could jam. It was such a complement to me when a really great musician would track me down at a festival and want to swap a tape (later CD). I am a little bit proud to say I have an album in the Library Of Congress. Silly I know for it is full of everything in the world. LOL

The songs we sang were hand-me-down songs from my parents. Songs of hope, loss, love, murder, faith, feuds, war and jolly tunes. I sat by the fireside as a child at night, as still as a knothole on the plank floor so that I would not break the spell, while Daddy would tell stories of his family and why they came to America and how they cleared the land for the railroads moving ahead of the rail laying crews. How music helped to bond families and neighbors and comfort and console. I heard stories of strong women and brave children and the songs that keep them alive.

My earliest memories are songs. I have not been before an audience for nearly 20 years but occasionally I am still recognized. I am always asked about the children, all grown, happy and successful, and whether or not we still play music. I just smile and say yes. It don't know how to explain to them that music runs through my life like a ribbon tying all the pieces of it together. My grandchildren tell me that I sing in my sleep. I think when I am old (only 71 now) that the last words I say........ will be a song.

Sorry, did not intend to write a booklet. Anyway, back to irises. Smiling
Thro' all the tumult and the strife I hear the music ringing; It finds an echo in my soul— How can I keep from singing?

Thanks for sharing that inspiring story with us, Granny Bonnie. I'll have to go back and read the other thread for your and everyone else's intro to iris. And thanks Arlyn for the link to that article. I'll be reviewing it again a little later this evening.

Bonnie - you have a way with words as much as with music. You are a natural story teller and that was a very nice slice of what makes you "you" that you shared. Thank You!
