A photo update of my Nepenthes maxima x ventrata this Spring 2017:

Lower leaves are drying out which is normal for most plants, so it looks really leggy. I was thinking whether to repot or could I cut it and will it root quick enough. I am glad I delayed doing anything. It seems it will still grow new leaves on that seemingly dried out stem:

Tarev, did you keep your Nepehthes really dry over the winter? How old is this plant?

Don't know how old the plant is itself, but in my care I got it last June 2016 during a carnivore show auction.

I have all my Nepenthes in standing water in any season, they prefer it that way here since our humidity levels are oftentimes very dismal here.

OK, your plant just looks so different than all of mine. Humidity is not a problem here (of course). I just try to keep the potting soil constantly moist (100% peat works fine for me so far), but sometimes the media does dry out before watering. My Nepenthes ventricosa 'Rosea' is not a bog plant, at least I don't think it is, so I have never tried to grow them as one. It is interesting that you do successfully.

I did not plan this as one of my "experiments", but it ended up being one.

I overwintered all my carnivores, Nepenthes ventricosa 'Rosea', in my "Everything Else" greenhouse. Some I grew on the upper shelves, getting gobs of light and lots of air circulation. Those plants often dried out before getting watered. Others were grown sitting on the floor, under two shelves of plants and thus lots of shade, had little air movement, and their potting media stayed pretty much constantly moist.

Those on the top shelves are way lighter green in color and have lots of pitchers. Those on the floor are a rich green, have more stem length, and have practically no pitchers.

All these plants were purchased in July, 2016.

Hi, I have been caring for a Venus flytrap and a hanging pitcher plant. I'm happy to report my Venus flytrap is flowering and my pitcher plant has new offshoots. I read that once the fly trap flowers it will likely die, I'm hoping it won't but if so, I hope to get some seeds. Hurray! as for the pitcher plant, I think I'll need to separate them, I hope I don't kill it. Any suggested ways to safely do this would be awesome.

IF you have identifiable separate plants there, each with its own roots, you can simply use scissors, shears, or a knife and cut the plants from the "mother" plant a the base. You can also cut off the tops, about 6" segments, dip the moist ends in rooting hormone, and then pot them up in seed-starter mix. Keep the mix always moist, shaded, and warm. These tops can be a little tricky to root but they will root.

I have never had a healthy VFT die after flowering and producing seed. They have always come back even larger the next spring.

I think the tale started about the same time as the mistaken belief that VFT's are terrarium plants. When stressing the plants with too high a humidity, inadequate air circulation and inadequate light conditions that you find in most terrariums, it is not surprising that the plants would die.

The one time I cut off the flower stalks on my plants is during the first spring after dividing them. That way they do not put a lot of energy into producing seeds, instead of repairing the damage to the rhizomes from dividing.

My Nepenthes even has new little branches coming up from the middle of the pot. It now sits under a mister for 12 hours a day. I'm sure that is some sort of clue to making them happy. I will go think about it. Whistling

I give each one enough distilled water each morning to slightly drain through. Then I pour the excess back into a clean jug for the next day, I'm not used to having to manage pure water so carefully.

It is an enlightening experience and one I would recommend to anyone used to living off tap water. I mean, seriously, how carefully do most of us think about water in very discrete amounts? Some people have to.

The good news is that the new peat and perlite mix (slow to get soaked) is finally thoroughly wetted and I can just give them the daily dose. I kept moving the pots to bowls the pots barely fit into and re-pouring the excess into them again and again.

They BETTER be happy. Glare Hurray!

And they are sure catching a lot of flies on their own!
