That's beautiful, JoAnn.

Bummer about your shiny shoes Allison. I'm glad most cuttings survived though.

This will be my third attempt in as many years to overwinter Coleus cuttings. My indoor environment in prior years was poor with only natural sunlight, such as it is in Winter, but now I have a lighted plant stand and, of course, am trying again. Any help you all can give me about ridding mealy bugs would really be appreciated. They aren't a problem...yet...but I'd like to be ahead of the game as much as possible. In the past I've dipped Q-tips in rubbing alcohol, and was recently told a spritz of Windex with Ammonia is another possible topical and can be diluted when it's time to water. Has anybody tried that? My biggest fear is damping off and have already lost several cuttings, even with a light hand watering.

systemic is the way to go.. in either Karen's granular or my watering version.. it is a life saver with mealy bugs.. never heard of anyone using windex & ammonia before .. you can always try to water with peroxide or use ground cinnamon on the soil to help with damp off.. another option is water with camomile tea

This is the stuff I use. It has worked very well for the last few years.

does that one need to be mixed in the soil before potting up Karen?.. or can it be used on top?

I just put a little in the pot, mix it into the top of the soil a little, and water. I use it when I bring things inside in fall, maybe one more time before spring or when I pot up. Once the bugs are controlled at the start, they're not a problem here in winter unless/until I bring home a new plant. Then I try to treat the new one and keep it isolated for a few days, giving the treatment time to work.

Allison, I didn't have much luck this year with Coleus seeds. Have you found them easy to germinate?

of course we deep fried!!!!... no other way baby!!!

I have had a lot of luck with seeds in the past.. I used the tin loaf pans.. sprinkled the seed on the surface and just pushed them in with a squirt water bottle.. and covered the loaf pan with plastic wrap... have no luck trying to push them in by hand.. since they are so tiny.. and always seem to stick to my hand

I do pretty much the same thing, and I'm reasonably sure I used bottom heat.

just keep in mind they take forever to get moving once they germinate.. they seem to stay tiny for a long time.. and then pick up normal growth later on
