I was so sad to hear of Sharon's passing. She was such a delightful and talented person. Her articles were always my very favorite because they always had her special blend of knowledge and narrative. She was a very special lady and will be dearly missed by all.

I don't think I have had any interactions with her on here at all. But she sounds like a really sweet lady, kind hearted, with an infectious way of thinking in a positive light. Always a sad then when a good person in the world passes on. I'm sure a soul like hers is looking down on everyone she had touched with a warming smile.

I remember a post Sharon had made in my blog over a year ago. Like all her writings this one had that special "Sharon Touch" about it. It was so memorable. I'd like to share it here in her Garden of Memories for others to see and enjoy.

Sharon said:First came the buzz of the June Bugs glistening in their dress coats of iridescent blue and green with their skinny little black legs and tiny feet traipsing across my bare and tanned knee as I knelt in the dew dampened grass of our front yard. Then came the clatter of the Katydids, nervous and hoppity in their race to get out of the hands that held their little green baby bodies. I never liked them when they grew older and bigger and were no longer green.

Then there were Lightning Bugs, zillions of them, tiny glitters dancing their way up the holler and over the trees and racing to see who could get to my front porch first. I waited for them there, not allowed to run barefoot up and down the holler after dark. They never failed to visit, lingered and stayed awhile, lighting up my fingers and then my nose and finally my hair. Ninna had to nearly turn me upside down to shake them loose, so tangled were they in my hair every night.

Then came the Jar Flies announcing their arrival as loud as any marching band and disturbing the quiet of that little mountain holler. They wanted to be heard and not seen but they left their calling cards all over Mom's plants and shrubs, shedding skin before climbing to the tops of trees and sucking the juice out of the leaves; leaving them dead and falling, just as they curled up and fell to the ground with them. Even after those Jar Flies were buried and gone, the echoes of their clackety song lingered and bounced around in the mountains of my mind.

Those were my Mountain Summers, Leon, we heard the same sounds, saw the same sights, ran barefoot on similar tanned feet and watched and listened so closely we brought those summers with us through all these years, didn't we? We are the lucky ones, Leon. Thank you for waking the memories.

I am saddened to hear of Sharon's passing. She was a truly thoughtful, kind, and giving person, even though I only knew her through her posts on Cubits and here. I loved her articles, especially those with her Aunt Bett--she was such a gifted writer.

The garden will be a little less vibrant without Sharon.

Thanks to Dave and Trish for the beautiful memorial page, and all of the wonderful memories of Sharon that have been posted here.

I remember her telling about the thanksgiving she was 6 (?) and she realized 'who' the turkey was, and became a vegetarian on the spot, refusing to eat it. I don't remember all how the story went but she went on a hunger strike? And said she wasn't eating anything that had eyes and could see her or something like that. Angel

I remember that too plus a lot of other stories relating to not wanting to eat meat. For her health's sake she finally had to resort, much against her wishes, to eating a little chicken and seafood.

For those asking about services, Sharon's daughter posted this to Facebook today:

~ Thank you everyone for such dear condolences. I am truly finding out how much she meant to people in so many parts of the country. From her students to her own classmates and her gardening buddies to neighbors and of course our family. She had a positive impact on so many people's lives.
We will be having Sharon Webb Brown's memorial service at Green Turtle Bay on Saturday, October 15th starting at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers we will be asking for donations and 100% of the proceeds will be given to a charity that I believe Mom had told me about in the past. Mom was always talking about native flowers and plants. She would try to grow a green thumb on me, but it never really happened...
Kentucky Native Plant Society provides education about the flowers, plants, trees and herbs that are strictly native to Kentucky. They have a grant program as well.
More information about the Sharon W Brown memorial fund account will be given this weekend.
I do hope many of you can attend Mom's service.
Thank you again for everyone's condolences during this extremely difficult time.

Melanie, how did you find out how to make a donation? I went to their website but found nothing about donations. I sent an e-mail and rec'd a reply but she is away from the office without good internet service and said she would contact me when she returns.

I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others. ~~ Sharon Brown

Thank Ann, not me! Hilarious! It's through the Paypal link that says "Donate" under the Facebook link, like Ann said. I added in the notes that I was giving in memory of Sharon Brown. Hopefully, they'll get lots of donations to honor her. I'm a member of the FL Native Plant Society and I love helping another native plant society. Especially when I've had so much fun roaming the mountains of Eastern KY where my ancestors landed during the Civil War. Reading Sharon's stories made me feel more connected to that history.

Many people are concerned about the whereabouts and future of especially Sunshine (Sharon's dog) and also her cat Daisy. I have asked, and received a reply today. Sharon's daughter Ashley has taken both of them into her home. She said that Sunshine has settled in and is very happy.
