Problem editing plant name. Help needed.

1: Onion (Allium cepa 'Mars')
2: Ornamental Allium (Allium 'Mars')

Allium 'Mars' - change to Allium stipitatum 'Mars' (per http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticu...).

Adding species not allowed. Sends me to Allium cepa 'Mars'.

It seems we have two entries of Viola tricolor, one has it as a subspecies of Viola cornuta which is not correct as far as I know.

http://apps.rhs.org.uk/rhsplan...

Johnnyjump-up is used for both V. cornuta and V. tricolor

There are some references to Viola cornuta tricolor, whether or not there is such a plant the photos in that entry are mostly tricolor.

Itis recognises Viola tricolor but not Viola cornuta tricolor

http://www.itis.gov/servlet/Si...

RHS doesn't recognise Viola cornuta tricolor, nor does ITIS recohnise Viola cornuta!

There's plenty of Viola cornuta hybrids on the RHS, I feel sure that Viola cornuta tricolor is wrong.

http://apps.rhs.org.uk/rhsplan...

I can recommend the incorrect one is deleted, but the note at the top says all images with it. Should the images be moved first, or can I recommend they be moved when deleting?

Viola tricolor seems to be the accepted name. I copied this from the ITIS website:

Results of: Search in every Kingdom for Scientific Name containing 'Viola tricolor'

Kingdom Plantae
Viola tricolor L. -- accepted -- johnny jumpup, pansy violet
Viola tricolor var. arvensis (Murr.) Boiss. -- not accepted

I'm submitting most pics to move to V. tricolor. There's two I have to decide where to move first as they are different, then I will get the entry deleted.

Sue's image is a V. cornuta type but which one!

I came across VIOLA CORNUTA SKIPPY BLUE YELLOW which is close!

http://www.gardenworldimages.c...

There is a Viola cornuta x Fun Eyes Tricolor which it could be, that's a name and not a subspecies but there's no photos anywhere.

http://www.b-and-t-world-seeds...

Joy has a V. cornuta Bowles Black, the rest I suggested moving to V. tricolor. Maybe Sue's should remain until a name is found for sure, if ever! There's always new ones coming out.

There's another VIOLA CORNUTA SKIPPY WHITE VIOLET WING but the face is white, I think it fits in VIOLA CORNUTA SKIPPY BLUE YELLOW , they do vary..

Lol, it is very cute I agree Sue! It really does look to go in VIOLA CORNUTA SKIPPY BLUE YELLOW but I can't be sure, it is blue and yellow and shows traits that VIOLA CORNUTA SKIPPY WHITE VIOLET WING has but it could still be that as it has the little patches on the 'wings'!

Sue, I haved searched all the Violas I can find on gardenworld images and the closest to yours is Viola cornuta Skippy Frosted Face. There is a top petal showing in the bottom left which has more purple on, these are usually variable and it seems to fit best.

http://www.gardenworldimages.c...

Do you want to make an entry for that, then we can delete the entry yours is in.

Yours does look similar to the photo of Viola cornuta Sue, but it is a much more rounded shape with blotches on the top petals where that has all dark top petals. It will be a hybrid of that one for sure.

Put the photos side by side and you will see what I mean. Then put yours next to the photo of Viola cornuta Skippy Frosted Face and see how they compare, the photo on garden world images shows a flower a little bent over and a little over exposed but they have the same characteristics. There is always variation but the general appearance is the same, even in your photo looking at the bottom flower it's paler.

If you don't think it fits any named variety in particular you could put it in Viola cornuta, if we come across a named one which really is a good match later it could be moved.

I vaguely remember these with the blotches on the wings, I used to look a lot at catalogues pre-internet days but there's so many new varieties that come on the market it's almost impossible to keep up with them! I have many small ones setting around which look to have crossed with the wild Viola tricolor and others I have grown in the past, now I just wait to see what sets around! I see some on the market which have been given names but look so much like my own crosses!
