I just looked it up online. I think one of my bulbs does have it. When I get home I'll remove the infected leaves. I don't think I've had it before but we had a really rainy Spring. We've also had fairly consistent rainfall this summer. Lily disease just makes the leaves look bad. None of the leaves have dropped yet so if I remove them the fungus shouldn't overwinter.

There are two other fungal diseases that impact the bulbs. I know I don't have those because this year I've gotten the biggest stalks and most flowers that I've ever had!

I have read about that Lily disease. It is the primary reason I don't grow them. I didn't want to put work in them for that disease to take them all out. My nursery sells some beautiful lilies but I won't try them. I'm a scaredy cat.

Jim yours are way ahead of mine! They just started blooming a couple of weeks ago. I'm hoping they get nice & big like yours!

Karen, how rainy is your area? I've had these for a few years & I've only had an issue this year due to all the rain. I'd try the lilies if your summers are typically on the dry side. We have a 4" surplus of rain for the year which is highly unusual for us.

My Lilium regale don't seem to be bothered at all. I haven't gotten a single flower though in 2 years due to squirrels! You might try those. They bloom in the late Spring but smell lovely too.

Elena i Missed your earlier thread about Cabbage -choy and wildflowers . If I decide to take any seeds this time I will check them out , I did not grow much this season Still have some fall started to try ,
That and I spaced off a few seeds ,
However watch and drool I will .

Lots of tiny plants to place
However the Fern Leaf Lavender is an annual , does not get as large as info says , might be good for a pot , The Dainty Fleabane most consider a weed however some seeds may develop .

My fuchsia arborescens (edit: fuchsia tree, big guy, not winter hardy, I'd say maybe zone 10?) is blooming now and being well pollinated by honeybees. Is anyone interested in seeds from this flower? It definitely takes a bit of effort to extract them and I definitely don't need any more, so I think I'll only harvest them if someone is interested. I love this plant, though, I'm so happy I grew it. I started it April 2016, and it's in a 5 gallon pot and thriving.

Now, in its outdoor location:

Oh, I thought I had a good photo of the blooms on this phone but I don't seem to, I'll have to edit this post when I find them. The flowers are tiny and bunched together like lilacs.

Anyhoo, it'll be collecting time soon on this guy, if I'm gonna do it.

It's very pretty but looks big! How tall is it in that pot & is it hardy to zone 6?

It is not a hardy fuchsia, it has to be brought in... I'd say it's probably zone 10? It may be ok with a light frost but not a hard freeze. But it enjoys cooler weather in general and needs temps to dip to 60s-70s(f) to bloom.

It is in fact VERY big, it's a fuchsia tree, thick trunk and all. It's about 5-6 feet tall at least right now. I don't think it's going to get significantly bigger until I get it into its 8 gallon pot, though. You can prune it to be shorter and bushier - I directed this guy to grow tall and relatively skinny when he was young.

Well that counts me out. I definitely don't have the space to overwinter something that big. Pity. It's really pretty.

Yeah I realized I'm going to need to get him his own greenhouse or something. I thought I could prune him enough to fit but once he got outside he just went whoomph! But omg the bees LOVE him - almost as much as they love the borage. Between him and the borage I've got dozens of bees in my yard at any given time.

I kept a bunch of these guys in one gallon pots for a while and they will flower at that size. They seem to want more room but will accept the smaller pot. I still have one, actually, in that size. The rest are in tiny pots till I have the mythical "more time" for potting up. The gemination on those seeds was amazing.

Heyyyyyyy outsidepride.com is having a 10% off Labor Day sale. The checkout code is "LABOR".

I just bought so many seeds, you guys. So, so many seeds. I asked my husband in jest, "So, how many thousands of dollars can I spend on seeds?" and he's like, "You cannot spend more than a thousand dollars on seeds." Me: "Sooooo, I ca--" Him: "Not $999.99, either." Me: "That's less than a thousand dollars." Him: Glare Me: Whistling

Anyway, I am about to have a lot of seeds to trade. Angel

I'm also starting to collect things in the garden. I bought some cheapo organza bags on Amazon and now my garden looks like it's the setting of the world's weirdest wedding.

Edit: Oh, anyone interested in brown tempest garlic bulbils? I don't have the time to coax seeds from the plants, but the bulbils can be planted like seeds and in ~3 years you'll have a properly large head of garlic.

Bwahaha! RIGHT? That's what I took away from it. La la la.

Thank you for the new seed site! I love outsidepride, I usually buy packs on Amazon but it's way more expensive to do that than order directly from them. Also love swallowtail gardens but I don't think they're having a sale right now.

@KarenHolt I may just get some petunias!! I don't usually do zinnias but have been waffling on geraniums. My beloved grandfather used to grow geraniums all the time. :)

You think you're excited, I'm beside myself right now, even though I won't be able to plant anything for a while. I've been organizing my seeds... and... AND!! I bought a 3 ring binder so I can start a proper garden journal so I won't keep wondering "What is this? Did I plant this?" or "Is it too late for me to plant seeds?" I'm gonna fill in a calendar with seed planting dates and then print it out, then put my seed packets in little pockets/zip bags in the binder, and then I'll stop doing my usual "OH HEY LET'S PLANT SEEDS" where I just get out a big handful of basically random (I claim to have some kind of plan, but I've come to realize that's boolsheet) seeds, toss them everywhere and then scratch my head a month later, wondering if that interesting looking thing is something I planted or a weed. There's also gonna be some polaroid photos and some printed guides on what my seeds look like when seedlings.

(Note to self: Usually it's a weed. Even if it's a very fascinating weed, it's still a weed.)

...We'll see how well I stick to this. >_>

For those into veggies and in the colder areas of the country-Hudson Valley Seed Co is having an overstock sale. The prices are really good & a lot of the seeds are organic.

I just placed an order!

The sale is on until mid-September.

They do have some flower seeds but not a lot.

A weed is simply a glower with a bad reputation. Especially if it produces flowers or looks interesting.

I bought a garden journal years ago. It has lots of good tips. A calendar of tasks by month and week, and space for you to put notes. I finally started using it this spring, and still play "did I plant this? " I figure if I identify one or two a year, I'll eventually be able to tell them all apart. Until then, pretty weeds get to live, especially if I can pass them off as exotic plants.

I'd probably be ok with the pretty weeds if they weren't on my state's list of noxious invasive plants for good reason. I found out the hard way. Sad Pretty faces, but no manners. Now if I see something I'm not sure about I run to the noxious weed website first thing!

I'm making my own planner since I couldn't really find exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to use my computer's calendar app to put in planting/sowing dates for everything on my list, then print that out. My husband heard me wishing for an aerial photo of my garden and took that as me saying "I totally think you should buy a drone". But at least now I have a great overhead picture. I'm going to modify it and make it into a line drawing and outline and identity my perennials, then draw in where I plant or sow stuff... And add pictures of the stuff as seedlings so I can get rid of anything that isn't what I planted!

Basically this season there was only ONE mystery plant that turned out to not be something that wanted to sabotage all my little beloveds. (Twinspur! Both colors! No idea how they got there but they're perfect right where they landed. Lucky me!) So, next year I'm gonna be a little more ruthless. Whistling

Edit: Check it out, one of the pictures of my yard from above! :D Thumb of 2017-09-01/Joolie/812599

How pretty!!! I love the covered sitting area you have, too.

My husband has been wanting a drone, too, and I have been thinking of getting him a nice one for a future gift....with the condition he takes an aerial photo of my garden. Rolling my eyes. Big Grin
