Kathy,
Adjacent to the Reynolda campus of WFU. This was part of the estate of RJ Reynolds, tobacco heir. The greenhouses were built by his wife about 1916 and they are British and gorgeous. Part of the parcel of land was willed, upon her death, to be a Botanic Garden, the rest to WFU. The rose gardens are breathtaking.
I believe the Garden Council runs it. There are an amazing number of Garden Clubs in Winston. The one I belong to has been in existence since the 1920's. They are all under the aegis of the Garden Council.
I am meeting up with some MENSA friends today in an hour. Want to see if we have an Orchid SIG(special interest grp) set up nationally or locally. Wouldn't that be fun?

Absolutely!
I'm pretty sure I went to the rose garden, but they weren't in bloom then. I can picture the area with lots of trees and looking very gracious.
If you locate an Orchid SIG, please invite them to chat with us. Always great to have more people with expertise and experience!

I just got back from Brattleboro and 3 ducklings followed me home, 2 in bloom. Pics later.

Kathy, your Vanda lamellata var boxalii is gorgeous. Is this one watered daily? How often does it bloom?

I've had it for I think 2 years. Confused This is the first it's bloomed. Pretty sure I got it on ebay after seeing one in a greenhouse. It has small blooms but it's so pretty. Here are a few more pics from today.

Yes, I water daily and I'd say it's a spring bloomer (once a year). At least I've only seen it in bloom in spring.

Janice, you've got quite a collection underway. Be careful about the glass windows (and skylights) you wish for.

Bree, I have Chocolate Drop 'Kodama' but have not bloomed it yet. Is that the photo? I thought the flowers are darker red.

Kathy, the Max. sanguinea photo is appreciated 'cause I just ordered one. Also, I think you need to switch your buying shoes from aerobics to running if you plan on keeping up with Janice. Rolling on the floor laughing

Ursula, Klaus is obviously a man of extraordinary vision as well as an exceptional microscopist. Lovey dubby What can I say? In vitro is all about counting your chickens before they hatch.

And I couldn't resist this Encyclia cordigera v. rosea x randii. I've had both cordigera before but it turned out that the label was wrong.

Ha, ha, Laurel. Rolling on the floor laughing I think I better pass my aerobic shoes to her too! Course I've bought about 30 plants since January!! But I sure would enjoy watching her get as crazy as me!!

Here's the third one not yet in bloom. Stlma Kelly 'Lea.' http://www.notsogreenthumb.org...
(I sure am enjoying using the Abbreviations link in the right side box a lot lately! Thanks for the link, Laurel!! I use all the tools I'm creating here. Fun!)

Thanks, Laurel, you had me laughing!
Lindsey, Sorry you are so far. Are you within a reasonable distance of Cary? The woman who comes to restock/care for orchids at Lowe's (who works for the wholesaler) told me that the Lowe's in Carey gets a tremendous and wonderful assortment of orchids, better than any in the state. I even thought of driving there. It is an hour and 1/2 away.
But when I get those thoughts I try to stop...I don't want to live in a jungle here. LOL
Kathy, Encyclia cordigera v. rosea x randii is amazing! That color combination....

Kathy, I'm with the Ursula School when it comes to picking favs and I do love Encyclias. That said, Encyclia cordigera has always been right up there at the top. I've got one that almost succumbed to scale and I'm hoping that's the reason it didn't bloom this past year. Sad I had the most humongous specimen years ago that would be covered in flowers about now. Well, I used to be 5' 10" and a size 8 too Smiling .

The "Ursula School" Hilarious! Smiling owns a Enc. cordigera x randii and it flowers usually in May for me.
I just looked if it is actually registered, it is - as Encyclia Rioclarense
http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticu...
have to write that on my tag. Btw the blooms smells nice, a sweet Grape juice scent if I remember correctly.

Janice, very cute Paph!
