|I need some advice for plants, trees, shrubs, bulbs, etc that would do well on the West side of my house, which gets extreme full sun in the summer, I want a beautiful yard and flower beds and I have a sprinkler system to keep it watered but need some ideas.
|The hot western exposure can be difficult. You might try juniper and barberry for shrubs. Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) can be grown as a small tree, or you might consider a crabapple if you have space for that. Flowers might include coreopsis, purple coneflower, daylily (Hemerocallis), sedum, and daffodil bulbs. Keep in mind that the above plants are fairly drought resistant so you would not want to overwater them. Water only as needed to keep the soil slightly moist. When you do water, apply it slowly and thoroughly so it soaks down deep to the deepest roots. This is better than a light daily sprinkling. Also, using an organic mulch several inches thick year round is very helpful in reducing watering needs, moderating soil temperature, holding down weeds, and also feeds the soil on an ongoing basis. Good luck with your landscaping!
