Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Velvet Thunder')

This is an old plant on my hill. It's not very prolific and it doesn't have too many buds but it is always beautiful. It's in a shady spot which probably affects the bud count. But the shade does help the blooms remain a deep velvety color with a nice thin white edge. I'll keep an eye on it this summer and see if I can improve the conditions. It might also be too crowded, lots of other old daylilies on the Hill!

It is a nice deep burgundy black in the shade. When the sun hits it, it fades to a dark red. It does have a nice thin red. As with many Benz red daylilies that were introduced around this time, the scapes are thick and stout with many short branches. With all of the newer reds, I decided that this was could leave the garden and it left 2 years ago.

So far, so good with Velvet Thunder here in my Zone 7b garden. It was positioned to get pretty direct sun all afternoon, and seemed to hold its color fairly well. It didn't "melt" or get all glossy/shiny like some other deep reds.

I got the plants from GH Wild at the end of March, so it was nice that they bloomed at all. Not terribly productive in their first year, but I'm withholding judgement until this year.
