Anyone know this sad little guys name? His leaves are very, very light green with faint dark green edges and the under side of every leaf is waxy and a darker green than the top but lighter green than the green outlining the edges. I think syngonium are mislabeled all the time. I actually have a holly/moonlight which isn't even possible but that was the label when I purchased it. Holly is moonshine and syngonium moonlight is silverpearl. I have a white butterfly that looks like my glo go... So I have no idea who this guy is

That is cute. : ) You're trying to attach a cultivar name?

I also found this sad guy and don't know who he is either. I have a T5 (left) and a ngern lai ma (right). I don't know if maybe he is one of those or a starlite or another cultivar altogether.

Syngonium podophyllum is the native to Florida plant. They change depending on amounts of sun, weather, etc. I KNOW they have other cultivars now, but there would be Latin names that describe what is different about them (colors, characteristics, etc). By the way, those are immature leaves, the adult leaf is radically different.
So many roads to take, choices to make, and laughs to share!

Just a tipโ€ฆdon't be surprised if your Mojito reverts to all green. It happens with amazing regularity.
A better choice for that color combo is Byrd, which is stable, but it's much more rare

Thank you. I had never heard of it. It's very pretty. I have a green splash but it's only leaf fell off. There's another one coming! It's so miniscule it's comical. I like the variegated greens. Green beauty, freckles, lime soda, and scrambled eggs are syngonium I love. Now I have another to add to my list. Thanks again :)

Syngonium are pretty tough. They can handle a lot of adverse stuff. I have different ones planted out in my yard, mistake, they are kind of invasive. They handle the lower 20's without difficulty here.
It only took my Mojito a few months to lose the variegation. I'm not sure why its so unstable. Friends here had the same experience

So I buy cuttings...medical bills, don't work, 1 income...anyway...a lot of cuttings I buy are not reverted because when it's gone, it's gone...but they are sellers with highly variegated plants and they are cuttings that have very little variegation and they think they are reverting. I bring them home and the new growth comes in crazy variegated. My albo syngonium and my variegated wend-imbe were my most recent experiences.

Yes, many people buy cuttings. The Mojito I got was highly variegated. All the variegation in these plants is chimeric. Just like the mutation that occurred in the first place to make it variegated, it can just as easily kind of mutate back to lose that trait. It also depends on how many cell layers the mutation has gone through in the meristem tissue whether the plant will be highly variegated, not so highly variegated, or prone to losing variegation altogether.

Is that where/how all mutations happen? Like spontaneous mutation of size and shape...or is that different and this is just responsible for color?

It depends. There are several different types of variegation. Chimeric variegation is usually spontaneous. When people refer to 'sport' variegation, as in, 'I have a leaf with a bit of sport variegation on it' that is a spontaneous genetic thing. If it sticks around, and can be reliably reproduced via vegetative propagation or through seeds, it's considered 'stable'. If it disappears and only returns every once in a while, or if a previously variegated plant goes all green (or all pink or all white) then the variegation in that particular plant has become unstable. It can entirely disappear forever, disappear for a span of leaves then come back, or come back if you cut the plant back behind the node where the last highly variegated leaf was.

I don't think size and shape are governed by the same rules. But I may be wrong. Some plants just have different forms naturally. Like large form and small form Monstera deliciosa. There are also forms of the same plant that are so genetically different that they won't hybridize with each other. Some anthuriums of the same species that grow in different geographical regions of the same country have been shown to not cross with each other
