As a comment about Peony (Paeonia lactiflora 'Balliol'), arctangent wrote:

Disambiguation note: There is a second P. lactiflora cultivar named 'Lord Kitchener', breeder Renault, year of introduction 2016. There is an entry for both this 'Balliol', aka 'Lord Kitchener' by Kelway, and the 'Lord Kitchener' by Renault in the APS registry, but the Renault cultivar is not in the NGA database. In the APS registry, both are listed under 'Lord Kitchener'. Specimens of the Renault cultivar can be seen in the W.E. Upjohn Peony Garden in Ann Arbor (Beds 5 and 26). The Renault cultivar is a deep cherry pink double, unlike the crimson red single introduced by Kelway.

It gets even trickier.

Kelway introduced two peonies named 'Lord Kitchener': a tree peony, and a purplish-crimson or maroon single lactiflora. The latter seems to have been confused in commerce with another of their single peonies, 'Balliol', which was taller and had bright red flowers & is probably the rather lovely peony carried by this German nursery as... 'Balliol'. Blinking

Virginia, if you want to use any of my photos of the Renault 'Lord Kitchener', feel free.

I guess breeders and sellers of peonies (and other nursery plants) weren't always very careful, or particular, in their naming and marketing practices, back in the day. Of course, they didn't have the internet, with its databases and search engines, so... Smiling

Thanks for adding to the confusion...or to my understanding of the confusion...over this instance in double, or in this case, triple naming. Thank You!

You must've gotten your psychic's license renewed! Just came to try to find your photos of LK, and here was a link just waiting for me—thanks so much, and I did add a couple of photos. I tip my hat to you.

The double-naming still goes on, although the APS registry does keep things down to a dull roar. I was just adding some Roger F. Anderson varieties to our database, and saw that there were 2 peonies called 'Independence Day', one not registered from 1999 & the other (Anderson's) registered in 2022. Apparently, the earlier one is a lot like 'Candy Stripe'... Thinking

Thanks again,
Virginia

You're very welcome. The way I look at it, the Upjohn Peony Garden is a public resource, so my photos of their collection should be public facing, too.
I appreciate the behind the scenes work you and others do to help maintain accurate online records of plants, their provenances, their histories, etc.
